What happens when Grok uses another AI model to answer your prompts? The answer depends on which Grok product you use. Official documentation describes consumer Grok as an xAI assistant that can search public X posts and the web, and use connected services. Those actions can bring outside information into an answer without another company’s AI model writing it. A separate, developer-configured Grok CLI feature does let users select custom model endpoints, including alternative providers or self-hosted models. Public documentation reviewed here does not establish that consumer Grok routinely sends prompts to another company’s LLM.

Does consumer Grok send prompts to ChatGPT or Claude?

Official product documentation presents Grok as an xAI assistant. X says Grok can decide whether to search public X posts and the web to answer a question. That describes information retrieval; it does not show that ChatGPT, Claude, or another outside LLM generates the response. X’s About Grok help page and xAI’s Grok page do not document routine consumer prompt-by-prompt routing to another company’s model.

This is a limit of what the public documentation establishes, not proof about undisclosed internal infrastructure. The documentation reviewed also does not provide a user-facing way to audit which backend handled a particular consumer response.

What can look like another AI model at work?

Web or X search

Grok may search public X posts or the web and use what it finds to inform its answer. Outside information in a response is not, by itself, evidence that another LLM generated that response.

Connectors to services and data

xAI describes Grok Connectors as integrations with apps and data. It says Grok can use a connector automatically when a question relates to the connected service. A connector provides access to an external tool or information source; that is different from sending the prompt to an external answer-generating model. See xAI’s connector guide.

Custom model endpoints in Grok CLI

The Grok CLI is a distinct developer setup. Its guide says the default models are hosted by SpaceXAI and explains how to configure custom endpoints for alternative providers or self-hosted models. In that setup, the endpoint is explicitly chosen during configuration, so the model answering a prompt may be operated by another provider or by the user. This is not evidence of hidden routing in consumer Grok. See the Grok CLI guide.

How to investigate a claim that Grok used another model

Start with the product surface and configuration, rather than a response’s style or wording.

  1. Identify where Grok was used: X, grok.com or the Grok app, an API integration, or the Grok CLI. Documentation for one surface does not establish how another works.
  2. Check for an explicitly configured model or endpoint: In the CLI, custom endpoint settings can identify an alternative provider or self-hosted model. Without that configuration, a claim of outside-model routing needs other evidence.
  3. Separate retrieval from generation: Look for evidence of web or X search, or a connector call. These can supply material to Grok without establishing that another LLM wrote the answer.
  4. Ask what identifies the alleged model: A response that sounds like ChatGPT or Claude—or names one—does not prove that model handled the request. A model’s statement about its own identity is not a backend audit.

For an individual consumer response, the official sources cited here do not establish which backend handled it. An answer’s style alone cannot settle that question.

What Grok’s use of your prompts means for privacy

Training statements vary by product surface and mode. X says interactions, inputs, and results when using Grok on X may be used to train and improve generative AI models developed by xAI. Separately, xAI’s consumer FAQ says Private Chat content and interactions, where available, are not used for model training. These statements are not interchangeable: check the current terms that apply to your product, account, and region. X’s Grok help page and xAI’s FAQ describe these policies.

Enterprise terms are separate. xAI says enterprise customer prompts and outputs are not used for model training, with a stated exception for free credits if a customer agrees; consult xAI’s enterprise information for the applicable terms.

What the public documentation does—and does not—show

The documented distinctions are between consumer search and connectors, which can bring in outside information or services, and the Grok CLI’s explicit custom-endpoint configuration. The available consumer documentation does not establish routine routing to another company’s LLM or let users verify the backend of a single response. Because product documentation and terms can change, consult the current page for the Grok surface you use.
