Which Mario games require the Expansion Pack?
Expansion Pack includes the standard NES, Super NES, and Game Boy libraries, and adds Nintendo 64, Game Boy Advance, Virtual Boy, and SEGA Genesis collections. Its GameCube collection is playable only on Nintendo Switch 2. These are membership benefits, not purchases of the original cartridges.

GameCube and SEGA Genesis
Expansion Pack includes a GameCube collection for Nintendo Switch 2, but the official sources reviewed do not establish a consolidated current Mario-only GameCube list. Do not assume a particular Mario GameCube game is included without checking the live catalog. The Genesis collection is also part of Expansion Pack, but the cited pages do not identify a Mario-related Genesis title list.

If the game you want is in NES, Super NES, or Game Boy, standard membership covers its collection. For the Nintendo 64, Game Boy Advance, or Virtual Boy entries above, you need Expansion Pack. For GameCube, you also need Switch 2, and should verify the exact title in the live collection.

How do you access the games, and what can affect availability?
- Choose a game and identify its collection system in the lists above.
- Download the matching Nintendo Classics application from Nintendo eShop.
- Sign in with an account that has an active membership tier eligible for that collection, then open the application.
- Connect to the internet periodically so Nintendo can validate the membership. Nintendo describes the collections as continuing to grow; the catalog may change after this U.S. snapshot.
Nintendo’s service overview explains the subscription libraries and membership access at Nintendo Switch Online; support details are available at Nintendo Support. Check Nintendo’s live pages for your region if a title is missing: the cited title lists are U.S.-focused, and the Virtual Boy collection is specifically limited to the U.S. and Canada.

No. Nintendo says its NES and Super NES classic-style controllers are not required to use those collections. They are an optional choice if you prefer the original-era button layout; check current availability through Nintendo before looking for one.
