To create a reusable filament profile, select the correct printer and nozzle, start from a suitable material preset, edit settings for your filament, then save it as a user preset. The exact controls depend on the slicer: this guide covers PrusaSlicer and OrcaSlicer, whose profile structures and export steps differ. A saved profile is not automatically validated; confirm it with the intended printer and material.
What a filament profile contains
A “profile” does not mean exactly the same thing in every slicer. In PrusaSlicer, a profile can combine print, filament, and printer settings, and profiles or bundles can be saved in INI format (PrusaSlicer profile import and export). In OrcaSlicer, presets are separated into printer (hardware), filament (material), and process (how to print the part) categories (OrcaSlicer profile guide).
That distinction matters: a filament preset handles material-related behavior, while printer and process presets cover other parts of the setup. Don’t assume a menu path or a single “profile” file will behave identically across slicers.
Create a custom profile in the right order
- Select the printer and nozzle you will use. Filament settings can depend on the printer; for example, Prusa notes that temperatures may vary by printer model. Choose the matching printer configuration before editing material values.
- Choose a starting preset. Use an existing preset for the same material when possible. Prusa’s universal filament templates can be starting points for printer-specific profiles, but they were tuned with Original Prusa printers and may not perform optimally on other machines (Prusa template filaments).
- Edit the settings that apply to your material and setup. OrcaSlicer identifies temperature, cooling, flow ratio, and maximum volumetric speed as filament-related settings. Use the filament maker’s guidance as a starting point and adjust for your actual printer. The cited documentation does not establish universal values for a particular filament.
- Save the edited settings as a named user preset. Use the slicer’s own preset-saving control and give the profile a name that identifies the material and, if relevant, the printer or nozzle. Save it in the appropriate filament category rather than overwriting a supplied preset. Exact save labels and controls vary by slicer and version.
- Validate it with the intended printer and filament. Treat the profile as a starting point until a print confirms it works for your setup. A saved preset is not itself evidence that its values are correct.
Save, export, and import in PrusaSlicer
Saving a preset inside the slicer and exporting a portable copy are separate actions. PrusaSlicer documents these routes:

- Export the current profile: use File > Export > Export Config.
- Back up custom settings together: use File > Export > Export Config Bundle to export custom settings saved in the current PrusaSlicer version.
- Import one configuration: use File > Import > Import Config.
- Import settings from a project: use File > Import > Import Config from Project. Project files include .3mf and .amf; these are distinct from INI configuration files.
- Import multiple profiles: use File > Import > Import Config Bundle.
For a local backup or troubleshooting, PrusaSlicer’s Help > Show Configuration Folder opens the configuration directory. The PrusaSlicer FAQ also describes a snapshots folder containing backups after updates (PrusaSlicer FAQ).
Save, export, and import in OrcaSlicer
OrcaSlicer stores user profiles in the application configuration directory, with custom presets in a user subfolder. To locate the active directory, choose Help > Show Configuration Folder (OrcaSlicer user profiles).

For portability, export a user filament preset bundle. To import a preset bundle, use File > Import > Preset Configs (OrcaSlicer import and export). Exporting provides a transferable copy; it is different from keeping the preset in the local user profile directory.

Common mistakes to avoid
- Using the wrong printer configuration: a material preset may rely on printer-specific temperature or hardware assumptions.
- Treating a template as a finished universal profile: a template is a starting point, not proof of compatibility with every printer.
- Confusing local saving with backup: a preset stored in the slicer is not the same as an exported configuration or bundle you can transfer or restore.
- Assuming profile values are universal: material, printer, and nozzle combinations differ, and the cited sources do not prescribe one set of values for every filament.
