Retraction controls how filament is pulled back during non-printing moves, temperature controls how hot the nozzle gets, and flow controls how much filament is extruded. They affect different parts of extrusion, but their symptoms can overlap: stringing, gaps, and weak layers may have causes beyond one slicer setting.

What retraction changes

When the nozzle finishes one printed area and travels to another, retraction pulls filament back before or during the move; extrusion resumes afterward. It is intended to reduce ooze and strings between printed areas. In PrusaSlicer, the cited controls are under Printer Settings → Extruder 1; other slicers may use different names or locations.

Retraction length, speed, and Z lift

  • Retraction length is how much filament is pulled back.
  • Retraction speed is how quickly the extruder motor performs that pullback. Increasing it may help with stringing, but excessive speed can make the motor skip steps.
  • Lift Z raises the nozzle during travel. Reducing the lift can improve stringing in some cases, but disabling it may let the nozzle hit the print.
  • Minimum travel after retraction sets a travel threshold that trades printing time against opportunities for oozing and stringing.

These values depend on the printer, extruder design, and filament. Prusa’s examples illustrate that they are profile-specific: it gives a 2 mm maximum for several direct-drive models and a 3.2 mm default in its Bowden MINI/MINI+ profile. Those figures are not general recommendations for other machines. Prusa: Retraction

What temperature changes

Nozzle temperature sets the heat used to melt and extrude the selected filament. It influences how readily material flows and how well printed layers bond. Printing too hot can contribute to stringing; printing too cool can contribute to cracking or layer separation. Neither symptom proves temperature is the cause.

  • 【Fits Most FDM Printers】 Designed for most 1.75mm FDM printers with external, top-mounted, or open spool holders. Each spool measures 140mm in diameter and 36mm in width, with a 53mm center hole. For Bambu Lab AMS or AMS lite, search MakerWorld for a compatible 250g spool adapter before use

Prusa gives 195–220°C as an example PLA range in its layer-separation troubleshooting guide and suggests investigating adhesion in 5°C increments. These are examples from that guide, not universal settings for every PLA brand, printer, nozzle, or profile. Start with the filament maker’s guidance and a compatible printer profile. Prusa: Layer separation

What flow changes

Flow controls how much filament the printer extrudes relative to the amount planned by the slicer. In PrusaSlicer, the filament-level setting is called Extrusion Multiplier. Firmware flow and slicer extrusion multiplier are separate controls; Prusa describes their combined effect as: Total flow rate = Flow multiplier in firmware (M221) × Extrusion multiplier in PrusaSlicer. • Too much flow can leave scarring on bottom layers or excess material on top surfaces.
  • Too little flow can leave gaps between layer lines or perimeters.

Flow can affect bonding: Prusa notes that increasing it can deliver more material and strengthen the bond in the context of troubleshooting layer separation. But raising flow is not a general fix for weak or gappy prints; temperature, profile settings, printer setup, and hardware may also be involved.

When to calibrate flow

Prusa says the ideal extrusion multiplier can vary by material, color, and even spool. Its calibration guide describes visual and precise methods, but calls calibration advanced and says it is ordinarily unnecessary for a new factory printer. In its specific visual procedure, it recommends small 1–2% adjustments; treat that as Prusa’s procedure, not a universal recipe for all slicers and machines. The precise method uses a caliper or micrometer. Prusa: Extrusion Multiplier calibration

How to distinguish the three settings

Setting What it changes Symptoms it may help investigate Key limitation
Retraction Filament pullback and return during non-printing travel Strings or ooze between printed areas Length and speed depend on printer design and material; incorrect values can cause other problems. Prusa
Temperature Nozzle heat for the selected filament Stringing if too high; weak adhesion or layer separation if too low Use guidance for the specific material and printer profile; the cited PLA range is an example. Prusa
Flow / extrusion multiplier Amount of filament extruded relative to the slicer’s plan Excess material or surface scarring if high; gaps between lines if low Check the profile, material, and hardware rather than using flow to compensate for every defect. Prusa

A sensible troubleshooting order

  1. Check the printer and material profile. Confirm the slicer is set for the actual printer, filament type, and nozzle size. Prusa recommends starting with stock profiles tailored to those choices. Prusa: Under-extrusion
  2. Verify temperature guidance. Use the filament manufacturer’s recommended range and the matching material profile rather than applying a generic temperature from another setup. Prusa: Layer separation
  3. Change one relevant setting at a time. For stringing, assess retraction and temperature together. Filament moisture and nozzle or hotend issues can also contribute, so a stringing print does not establish that retraction alone is wrong. Prusa: Retraction
  4. Investigate flow when the symptom supports it. Excess material or gaps may justify checking extrusion multiplier and calibration; do not increase it automatically to address weak layers. Prusa: Extrusion Multiplier calibration
  5. If adjustments fail, revisit the profile and machine. Profiles determine settings such as temperature, speed, and extrusion amount; printer setup and mechanical causes can also produce under-extrusion or related defects. Prusa: Under-extrusion
