Check the exact console model and the exact edition of the Mario game before buying or inserting it. On Nintendo Switch, Switch OLED, and Switch Lite, look up the game’s supported play modes; Switch Lite needs handheld-mode support for standalone play. If you have a Nintendo Switch 2, check Nintendo’s separate, title-specific compatibility information—compatibility is not guaranteed for every Switch game.
1. Identify your console and the game edition
“Nintendo Switch” can refer to the original Switch, Switch OLED, Switch Lite, or Switch 2. The distinction matters: the first three use Nintendo Switch play-mode information, while Switch 2 has a separate compatibility check. Nintendo’s Switch-family page identifies the Switch systems.
Next, confirm that the game listing or cartridge is for Nintendo Switch. Do not assume an older Mario cartridge will work just because it belongs to the same franchise. A classic Mario game offered through a Nintendo Classics library is also different from inserting a cartridge made for an older Nintendo system.
2. Check play-mode support on Switch, Switch OLED, or Switch Lite
For a Nintendo Switch game, find its supported play modes on the game packaging, its Nintendo.com game details, or its Nintendo eShop listing. Nintendo Support describes these as the places to check and says: “Nintendo Switch Lite can play any game that supports handheld mode, which are the vast majority of Nintendo Switch titles.” “Vast majority” is Nintendo’s qualitative description, not a percentage or guarantee about an individual game. See Nintendo’s play-mode and compatibility FAQ.

If you have a Switch Lite
Look specifically for handheld mode. Switch Lite is handheld-only and does not support TV mode. A game that lacks handheld-mode support may still be usable with compatible wireless controllers and additional setup, but check the game’s listing for its requirements rather than assuming it will work as a standalone Lite game.
If you have an original Switch or Switch OLED
Nintendo lists TV, tabletop, and handheld modes for these systems. Confirm that the game supports the mode you plan to use. Nintendo says Switch OLED is compatible with the full Switch game library, although some physical-fit exceptions apply to Nintendo Labo and games may look different on its screen; see Nintendo’s Switch system comparison.

Mario examples are not a franchise-wide guarantee
Nintendo names Super Mario Odyssey and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe as games compatible with Switch Lite, and identifies Super Mario Bros. Wonder as a Nintendo Switch game. Those examples do not establish compatibility for every Mario game or every console model. For a specific purchase, verify the exact edition and play-mode listing.
3. If you have a Nintendo Switch 2, check the exact title separately
Do not use a Switch-family play-mode check as proof that a Nintendo Switch game will behave perfectly on Switch 2. Nintendo says compatible physical and digital Switch games can run on Switch 2, but some software may not be supported or fully compatible. Search Nintendo’s Switch 2 compatibility information for the exact game. Nintendo notes that testing and updates may affect support or behavior, so consult the current title information when making a decision.

4. For classic Mario games, check the Nintendo Classics library
If you mean an older Mario game, check whether it is offered through a Nintendo Classics library rather than treating an old cartridge as a Switch game. Nintendo’s Nintendo Classics instructions list the libraries and specify membership requirements for particular libraries. Confirm both that the game is included and that you meet the requirement for its library.
