When you switch filament, start with a profile for the new material and check its nozzle temperature, bed temperature, and part-cooling settings before printing. Then confirm the printer and build surface are suitable for that filament. Adjust retraction only if stringing or oozing calls for it; there is no single retraction value that works across printers and materials.
Do you need to change slicer settings when changing filament?
Usually, yes. Different materials—and sometimes different filament products—can call for different temperatures and cooling behavior. In PrusaSlicer, filament settings are managed separately, and its documentation and material guidance show why a matching filament profile is a better starting point than carrying every setting over unchanged: PrusaSlicer filament settings.
Choose a preset that matches both the material and, when available, the specific product. Presets can also depend on the printer, so check that the selected profile is intended for your machine. Follow the filament maker’s instructions when they differ from a general example.
Which settings should you check first?
Nozzle temperature
Check the recommended temperature for the first layer and for later layers. A material’s temperature guidance is a starting point for a particular filament and printer setup, not a value to apply universally. Prusa’s PETG guide, for example, lists 230 °C for the first layer and 240 °C for subsequent layers: Prusa Research’s PETG guide.

Bed temperature
Check the bed temperature for the filament and the build surface you are using. Prusa’s cited PETG guidance lists 85 °C for the first layer and 90 °C for later layers. Those figures are specific to that guide’s context; use the profile or manufacturer recommendation for your own filament and printer.
Part cooling
Cooling helps solidify layers and can improve bridges and detail, but more fan is not always better. For some materials, too much cooling can contribute to warping or layer separation. Prusa describes always-on fan behavior as typical for most materials, with ABS, ASA, PC, and some flexible filaments as exceptions; its overview explains the tradeoffs: Prusa’s cooling guide.

Use the material profile as your baseline, then consider what the print needs: more cooling may help preserve fine detail, while less cooling may favor layer bonding and toughness for some materials. Avoid treating one fan percentage as appropriate for every filament.
What does a PETG profile illustrate?
PETG shows why changing filament involves more than temperature. Prusa describes PETG as useful for many mechanical parts, with strong layer adhesion and low warping, but also a tendency to string. Its guide recommends a powder-coated TXT or satin sheet in the cited setup and warns that PETG can bond too strongly to smooth PEI, potentially damaging the surface.

In that same guidance, Prusa suggests leaving the fan off for the first few layers and then running it at about half power. It also notes that printing with the fan off can favor toughness, while cooling can help detail and reduce stringing or oozing. These are profile- and setup-specific recommendations, not a universal PETG recipe. Check the build-plate guidance for your printer before printing.
When should you change retraction?
Retraction is a troubleshooting adjustment, not a setting to reset by a formula whenever you change material. If the new filament produces persistent stringing or oozing, consult the filament and printer profile and make cautious adjustments. For PETG, Prusa identifies higher retraction and lower nozzle temperature as possible ways to moderate stringing, but does not prescribe one distance for every printer.

How to make the switch safely
- Select a filament preset for the material and, if available, the exact filament product. Confirm it matches your printer.
- Check first-layer and later-layer nozzle temperatures, then bed temperatures, against the product guidance.
- Review part cooling for the material rather than assuming your previous fan settings still apply.
- Confirm that the printer can reach the required temperatures and that the build surface is compatible with the filament.
- Print using the profile as a starting point. If stringing or oozing persists, investigate retraction and temperature using printer- and filament-specific guidance.
Manufacturer guides can organize recommendations by filament and include details beyond slicer temperatures. For example, Bambu Lab’s Filament Guide includes filament-specific recommendations and drying information. Use the guide for your own brand and product rather than combining settings from unrelated profiles.
