No—the iPhone Air has no physical SIM slot. It uses eSIM, supports two active eSIMs, and can store eight or more. A carrier works only if it supports eSIM for your iPhone Air and your plan and account are eligible.
Does the iPhone Air take a physical SIM card?
No. Apple’s iPhone Air technical specifications say the phone uses eSIM and is not compatible with physical SIM cards. A physical SIM from an older phone cannot be inserted into the iPhone Air.
The iPhone Air supports two active eSIMs at once and can store eight or more eSIMs. Stored eSIMs are profiles you can keep on the phone; that does not mean all of them are active simultaneously.
Which carriers work with iPhone Air?
The carrier must support eSIM for the iPhone Air, and your particular wireless plan and account must qualify. Apple’s U.S. and Canada carrier support list includes AT&T, T-Mobile USA, Verizon Wireless, Metro by T-Mobile, Mint Mobile, Visible, Xfinity Mobile, and Boost Mobile, among other providers. The list is a starting point, not a guarantee that every plan or account can be activated.

Before switching or purchasing a plan, ask the carrier to confirm support for your iPhone Air model, your plan’s eligibility, and the activation method available to you. Coverage and plan conditions also depend on the carrier and where you use the service.
Activation methods vary by carrier
Apple’s eSIM carrier and activation-method directory documents different methods by provider, including carrier activation, eSIM Quick Transfer, QR codes, and carrier apps. For example, Apple lists carrier activation for Verizon Wireless and Xfinity Mobile. Quick Transfer is listed for AT&T, T-Mobile USA, Verizon Wireless, and others. These examples do not establish that every method is available for every plan or account.

Mainland China has a specific activation route
Apple says only iPhone Air model A3518 can be activated in mainland China. Activation must be completed at a China Mobile, China Telecom, or China Unicom store, where identity verification is required; additional requirements may apply. Dual SIM lets you use two lines, such as separate personal and business numbers or a home line and a travel line. The phone uses only one cellular data network at a time. To use lines from two different carriers, the iPhone must be unlocked; otherwise, both plans must be from the same carrier. Apple explains these conditions in Using Dual SIM with an eSIM.

What to confirm before you activate
- Ask whether the carrier supports eSIM for your iPhone Air model in your country or region.
- Confirm that your specific plan and account are eligible, and ask which activation method the carrier supports.
- If you plan to use two different carriers, confirm that the iPhone is unlocked.
- For mainland China, check the model number and store-based identity verification requirements before relying on activation there.
