Choose by comparing what changed—not by trusting the label. A remaster usually aims to preserve the original game while improving its presentation or technical delivery; a remake may rebuild or substantially redesign more of it. If you want the release as it originally played, choose the original where you can access it. Before buying, check gameplay, included content, platform support, and save or upgrade compatibility for the exact edition.

What separates a remaster from a remake?

There is no universal technical rule that divides the terms. Square Enix localization project manager Yusuke Haraguchi describes a remake as a project that may re-fashion a game with modern tools or make large-scale changes; a remaster generally seeks the same gaming experience with newer graphics, higher resolution, or an improved development medium. Those are useful tendencies, not guarantees. Square Enix’s explanation acknowledges that projects vary.

Original

The original is the specific release first published for its original platform or platforms. It is the clearest choice when you want that release’s presentation, mechanics, and historical context, although access may depend on platform availability and compatibility.

Remaster

A remaster typically retains the recognizable game and its core experience while improving how it looks or runs, or adapting it to a newer technical medium. The amount of work can still be substantial. Electronic Arts says Mass Effect Legendary Edition builds on original assets and enhances elements such as lighting, shadows, post-processing, environments, and reflections while aiming to remain true to the trilogy’s aesthetic.

Final Fantasy X|X-2 HD Remaster - Nintendo Switch
  • Updated and reconstructed visuals to be far more realistic and richly textured vs the original game
  • Upgraded models for each character, graphical updates for a more immersive environment
  • Estimated gameplay hours: 40 to 50 per title
  • Sound: Players will be able to choose between original sound and the new, re-arranged sound

Remake

A remake can rebuild much more: graphics, characters, levels, systems, or aspects of the design and gameplay. Ubisoft’s December 15, 2021 announcement described its planned Splinter Cell remake as rebuilt from the ground up in the Snowdrop engine, while intending to retain the original’s linear structure and identity. That announcement describes plans at that time; it does not establish the project’s later release status or final features.

Why the label alone is not enough

Games do not always fit neatly into one category. Vicarious Visions Game Director Dan Tanguay called Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy “a remaster plus.” He said the original code and assets were nearly unusable, so the team rebuilt gameplay from scratch using the original level geometry as a guide, rebuilt characters and cinematics, and added features including unified saves, menus, and time trials. The project’s label does not convey all those details.

Resident Evil Origins Collection - PlayStation 4 Standard Edition
  • Return to the series origins - Discover the truth behind what led to the horrors at the Mansion in Resident Evil in this fan-favorite and popular prequel title to the series.
  • Completely enhanced visuals - New high-resolution textures have been created from scratch, including 1080p support on next-gen consoles, while still preserving the classic appearance of the original release.
  • Fan-favorite Resident Evil characters - Rookie S.T.A.R.S. member Rebecca Chambers and wanted criminal Billy Coen combine skills and buddy up to survive the undead and infected nightmares that await them.
  • All original difficulty levels plus new Very Easy Mode for novice players

Conversely, a remake can modernize the experience while trying to preserve its identity. PlayStation describes The Last of Us Part I as a ground-up remake, with modernized gameplay mechanics and expanded accessibility options. Those changes matter to someone deciding whether the newer edition feels like the game they want.

BRAVELY DEFAULT FLYING FAIRY HD Remaster
  • Graphics remastered in beautiful high-definition
  • Two brand-new minigames
  • Featuring music by Revo of Linked Horizon
  • Redesigned UI for a single screen
  • Quality of life upgrades: fast-forward, encounter rate settings, upgraded online compatibility for modern networks
  • How much was rebuilt? Look for statements about original code and assets, newly created assets, engines, levels, and systems. A label alone may conceal a hybrid approach.
  • How does it play? Check whether controls, mechanics, difficulty, camera, pacing, or level design changed. New visuals do not prove that gameplay is untouched.
  • What story and content are included? Check for altered scripts, added chapters, omitted modes, and content that is sold separately.
  • What convenience and accessibility features are included? Look for accessibility options, save and checkpoint systems, menus, and quality-of-life updates.
  • Will it work with your platform and ownership? Verify the exact platform and edition, backward compatibility, upgrade options, and whether saves or trophies transfer. These can differ between releases of the same game.
  • Which experience are you after? If you value a particular historical release, look for the original where accessible. If you want improved presentation but a familiar experience, a remaster may suit you. If you want a substantial rebuild or reinterpretation, consider a remake.

Example: edition differences can affect the decision

PlayStation’s US product page for The Last of Us Part I says the PS5 remake includes Left Behind but not the original Factions multiplayer. Its FAQ states that there is no upgrade path from the PS3 or PS4 versions to the PS5 remake, and that saves and trophies do not transfer. Those are details for this specific game and edition, not general rules about remakes. Check the current product information for your region and platform before choosing.
