You can use a compatible Galaxy Tab as a laptop-like device by turning on Samsung DeX, adding a keyboard and mouse, and opening the Android apps you need. DeX provides a desktop-style workspace with movable and resizable app windows, but it does not turn the tablet into a Windows or Mac computer: check your essential apps, peripherals, and model-specific display support before relying on it.
What you need for a laptop-like Galaxy Tab setup
Start with the work you expect to do. DeX is Samsung’s desktop-style workspace for supported Galaxy devices. You can use it on the tablet screen, with keyboard and pointer input, or connect a larger display when the tablet supports that option. Samsung describes DeX as a productivity feature for using a Galaxy device with a larger display, keyboard, and mouse in its DeX guide.
- A compatible Galaxy Tab: DeX features and video-output options vary by model and software version.
- A keyboard: Use a compatible keyboard cover, or connect a USB or Bluetooth keyboard.
- Optional pointer: A mouse or trackpad can make windowed work easier, though the touchscreen and S Pen are also input options.
- Optional larger display: Connect a compatible monitor or TV wirelessly or by cable if your tablet supports the chosen method.
- Your required apps: Confirm that the Android versions of your work apps handle the tasks you depend on.
Check your tablet’s DeX and display compatibility
Before buying a keyboard cover, USB-C video adapter, or monitor accessories, check the exact model and software version. Samsung’s current US guidance lists standalone DeX for the Tab S4, S6, S7 series, S8 series, S9 series, A9+, S10 series, S11 series, and A11+. Availability can vary by software and market, so confirm your particular device in Samsung’s workspace guidance and Galaxy tablet DeX guide.
DeX availability does not guarantee that a tablet can send video to an external screen. Samsung specifically says the Tab S9 FE, S9 FE+, S10 FE, S10 FE+, and S10 Lite are not compatible with HDMI output. An adapter cannot add video output to a model that lacks it. Check Samsung’s model-specific tablet guidance before choosing a wired display setup.

Set up DeX on the tablet screen
- Open Quick Settings. Swipe down from the top of the tablet screen to open the Quick Settings panel.
- Start DeX. Tap the DeX control, if available, and follow the on-screen prompts. Samsung’s current DeX workspace guide documents standalone DeX on supported tablets. On supported devices running Android 16 with One UI 8.0, Samsung also documents launching standalone DeX from the Home screen.
- Arrange your apps. Open the apps you need, then move or resize their windows to suit the task. Window behavior and available controls can depend on the app.
- Connect input devices. Attach a compatible keyboard cover or pair a USB or Bluetooth keyboard and mouse. Samsung also lists touchscreen and S Pen control. See its keyboard and mouse instructions for supported input methods and connection details.
- Try your real workflow. Open the documents, websites, communication tools, and other apps you use, and check that the features you need work in DeX before treating the tablet as your only computer.
Choose a setup that matches how you work

A keyboard cover keeps the setup compact, while separate peripherals can suit a fixed desk. A monitor is optional, not a prerequisite for standalone DeX. Samsung documents wired and wireless display paths for supported devices, but wireless results can depend on compatibility between the tablet, display, and network; its regional DeX guidance does not establish a universal performance or latency level.
Know what DeX can—and cannot—replace
DeX is an Android app environment with a desktop-like interface, not a way to run every Windows or macOS program. Samsung says Galaxy apps can be accessed in DeX, but that does not establish that every Android app has a desktop-optimized layout or includes all the capabilities of specialist desktop software. Check the particular apps and workflows you rely on; pay special attention to desktop-only tools, complex peripheral setups, and features your work requires.

Also distinguish standalone DeX from DeX for PC. Samsung says DeX for PC is no longer supported on Galaxy devices released with or updated to One UI 7 or later. Support for DeX on Mac ended in January 2022; existing installs may still work but no longer receive support or updates, and the software is no longer downloadable. These limits are covered in Samsung’s DeX app-access and support information.

Use the tablet for the same tasks you expect to do away from your laptop, rather than judging it only by whether DeX opens. A short practical check can uncover missing app features or awkward input before they interrupt your work.

- Open your essential apps and complete a representative task in each one.
- Try the keyboard shortcuts, text selection, copy and paste, and pointer behavior you use most.
- Check whether your files and peripherals work with the apps available on the tablet.
- If you need a monitor, test the actual wired or wireless connection with your tablet model before depending on it.
- Decide whether the tablet screen and chosen keyboard are comfortable for the length of time you expect to work.
