Imported 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray discs are region-free, but they will play only in a player that supports Ultra HD Blu-ray. If a set also includes standard Blu-ray or DVD discs, check those discs separately: they may be region-locked. Confirm the exact player model and the set’s contents before buying.
Check the disc format and your player first
Sony says Ultra HD Blu-ray discs are region-free and can play on devices that support Ultra HD Blu-ray, regardless of where the discs were purchased. That does not mean every player described as “4K” can play them: a standard Blu-ray player that upscales HD video is not necessarily a UHD disc player. Check the exact model’s product specifications or manual for explicit Ultra HD Blu-ray playback support. Sony’s region-code guide directs owners to their device documentation.
- Find the full model number on the player or its settings screen.
- Open the manufacturer’s product page or manual and look for “Ultra HD Blu-ray” playback support. Do not rely on the brand name or “4K” wording alone.
- Read the import listing’s contents to determine whether it includes UHD discs only or also standard Blu-ray or DVD discs.
Check standard Blu-ray and DVD discs in a combo set
Region-free status applies to the UHD disc, not automatically to other formats packed in the same box. Standard Blu-ray discs use regions A, B, and C; DVDs use a separate region-number system. Check the label on each disc or case and compare it with the player’s manual.
Sony lists Blu-ray Region A as North America, South America, U.S. territories, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, and some parts of Southeast Asia; Region B as Europe, Africa, the Middle East, Australia, and New Zealand; and Region C as other parts of Asia. A standard Blu-ray marked ABC is described as region-free. These Blu-ray regions are not interchangeable with DVD region numbers. Sony says a player or drive generally plays standard Blu-ray discs from its own region unless its documentation specifies otherwise. See Sony’s region-code guide for its region descriptions.

What manufacturer examples show
The Philips BDP7301 manual distinguishes the formats: it says the player is designed for BD-Video Region A and DVD-Video Region ALL or 1, while Ultra HD Blu-ray discs have no region codes. LG’s UBK80 product sheet similarly lists Ultra HD Blu-ray support while specifying Region B for ordinary Blu-ray playback. Check the 4K and HDR connection separately
A disc can be region-compatible and still fail to deliver a 4K or HDR picture if the rest of the setup does not meet the player’s requirements. Check the manuals for the player, receiver, and TV or display for supported resolution, HDR formats, and HDMI requirements. For example, the Philips BDP7301 manual specifies a compatible 4K/60p and HDCP 2.2 device, an HDR-compatible display, and an 18 Gbps high-speed HDMI cable for UHD playback. Those requirements are specific to that model and configuration; do not assume every player needs a new cable. Consult the Philips BDP7301 manual and the documentation for your own equipment.

If an imported UHD disc will not play
If you have confirmed that the disc is Ultra HD Blu-ray and the player explicitly supports UHD playback, do not assume a region lock is the cause. Check the exact player manual for troubleshooting steps, note any on-screen error message, and contact the manufacturer with the model number and message if needed. A combo set’s standard Blu-ray or DVD disc may have a different regional restriction than its UHD feature disc.
