No single visual check or serial lookup proves both that a CPU is genuine and that it works.
1. Record the CPU’s identity before handling it
Photograph the top and underside of the processor, including its model markings, serial or batch numbers, contacts or pins, and any seller packaging. Save the listing and the seller’s claimed model so you can compare them with the manufacturer’s results and your test findings.
2. Inspect the CPU for physical damage
Use bright light and examine the processor closely. Intel describes visual inspection with the naked eye or a 3× magnification scope. A magnifier can help reveal surface details, but it cannot authenticate a processor or establish that it works.
- Look for cracks in the substrate, chips, smashed corners, burn marks, deep scratches, exposed traces, missing components, or peeling or blistering.
- Check pins or contact pads for bending, damage, missing pieces, or contamination. CPU designs differ: some have pins and others have pads.
- Check whether markings are scratched, altered, or too damaged to read clearly.
AMD’s boxed-processor warranty guide lists bent, damaged, missing, or contaminated pins or pads, as well as scratches affecting marking legibility, among examples of external damage. Intel likewise documents external damage such as cracks, chips, and damaged contacts in its desktop processor damage guidance.
#1 Best Overall
- The world’s fastest gaming processor, built on AMD ‘Zen5’ technology and Next Gen 3D V-Cache.
- 8 cores and 16 threads, delivering +~16% IPC uplift and great power efficiency
- 96MB L3 cache with better thermal performance vs. previous gen and allowing higher clock speeds, up to 5.2GHz
- Drop-in ready for proven Socket AM5 infrastructure
- Cooler not included
Do not treat socket pressure marks by themselves as proof of damage. Intel notes that marks from the motherboard socket can occur during normal use; cracks, bent contacts, missing components, or other physical defects are more significant.
3. Verify that the markings match the claimed processor
A processor can look convincing while carrying altered markings. Intel calls this “remarked”: its support article says, “Unfortunately, sometimes Intel® processors are sold in certain markets and could have their markings altered. (This is also referred to as remarked).” The article was last reviewed on 2023-07-14.

For an Intel processor
- If the CPU is installed: Run Intel Processor Diagnostic Tool (IPDT). Intel recommends checking that the “Genuine Intel” result passes and that the product name matches the processor you expect. Follow Intel’s authenticity-check instructions.
- If you have the CPU in hand: Use its FPO batch number and full or partial ATPO serial number in Intel’s warranty center, following Intel’s instructions. Compare the resulting identity with the markings and the seller’s claim.
For a boxed AMD processor
Scan the QR code on the tamper-evident authentication label on the box and compare the processor details shown with the CPU and the seller’s description. AMD’s boxed-processor guide describes this check. If the processor is unboxed, this particular label check is unavailable; AMD notes that a serial number may appear on the processor lid.
These checks answer an identity question, not a reliability question. A matching manufacturer result does not show that the processor is undamaged or stable in operation, and appearance alone cannot establish that it is genuine.

4. Test the CPU in compatible, known-working hardware
When possible, install the processor in a system known to work and compatible with that exact CPU. Check the motherboard’s supported-processor list and BIOS requirements first. A no-boot result is not enough to condemn the CPU if the board does not support it or needs a suitable BIOS.
- Confirm the CPU model and the motherboard’s compatibility and BIOS requirements.
- Install the CPU according to the processor and motherboard manufacturers’ instructions. Do not force it into the socket.
- If there is a problem, isolate other parts and installation causes. Where feasible, try the CPU in another compatible, working system to see whether the issue follows the processor.
AMD recommends a compatible component-swap test to help determine whether a reported issue follows the CPU. Its guidance is in the AMD boxed-processor warranty and handling guide. If you do not have suitable hardware, a local PC repair shop may be able to perform that test.

- Pure gaming performance with smooth 100+ FPS in the world's most popular games
- 6 Cores and 12 processing threads, based on AMD "Zen 5" architecture
- 5.4 GHz Max Boost, unlocked for overclocking, 38 MB cache, DDR5-5600 support
- For the state-of-the-art Socket AM5 platform, can support PCIe 5.0 on select motherboards

5. Treat warranty and seller returns as separate checks
A used CPU’s authenticity and working condition do not guarantee manufacturer warranty coverage. Intel’s processor warranty guide says its guidance does not honor warranty requests for used, gray-market, second-hand, or gifted processors, and excludes counterfeit or remarked units. AMD’s cited guide is specifically for boxed processors purchased new through retail and lists physical-damage exclusions; it should not be treated as a general warranty promise for a used CPU.
Check the exact model, the seller’s return terms, and the applicable regional warranty directly before buying. Do not assume that a second-hand processor has manufacturer coverage.

How to judge a used CPU offer
Keep these questions separate when comparing processors or sellers:
- Condition: Are the CPU and contacts free from meaningful physical damage?
- Identity: Do manufacturer tools, markings, or the boxed authentication label match the claimed model?
- Operation: Has the CPU passed a test in compatible, known-working hardware?
- Protection: Can you return it if the identity or test result does not match the seller’s claim, and is any warranty actually applicable?
No counterfeit-rate estimate is established by the manufacturer guidance cited here, so appearance or a single lookup should not be used to infer how likely a particular offer is to be fake.
