To find a U.S. supplier for a small production run, define your product and manufacturing requirements first, then search capability-based directories and ask the NIST Manufacturing Extension Partnership (MEP) network about supplier scouting. Treat every listing or referral as a lead—not proof that a manufacturer accepts small orders or has capacity. Confirm minimum quantities, setup costs, production location, quality controls, and schedule directly with each candidate.
Start with a manufacturing brief
Before searching, write a concise brief that makes it possible for a manufacturer to judge fit and quote consistently. Include:
- Drawings, specifications, or a reference sample
- Material, manufacturing process, tolerances, and finish
- Expected first-run quantity and likely repeat volume
- Packaging and delivery destination
- Target production and delivery dates
- Required certifications, testing, or other quality requirements
Share sensitive design information carefully. Agree on appropriate confidentiality and intellectual-property terms before disclosing proprietary details.
Where to find U.S. manufacturers
SBA’s manufacturing portal and listed platforms
The U.S. Small Business Administration’s Make Onshoring Great Again portal is a free starting point for connecting with verified U.S. manufacturers, producers, and suppliers. It lists IndustryNet, Thomasnet, CONNEX Marketplace, and IQS Directory as discovery routes. The SBA describes IndustryNet as listing over 350,000 U.S. suppliers and Thomasnet as helping small and medium businesses compare over 500,000 American suppliers; those are platform coverage figures reported on the SBA page, accessed October 7, 2026, not counts of suppliers that accept small runs. A 2025 SBA launch announcement cited more than 1 million American suppliers in its database, a historical launch figure rather than a current directory count.

These platforms offer different ways to search industrial suppliers, but a directory listing does not establish that a particular company will take your quantity, meet your specification, or have current capacity. Use the platforms to build a shortlist, then verify details with each manufacturer.
NIST MEP supplier scouting
The National Institute of Standards and Technology’s Manufacturing Extension Partnership (NIST MEP) can search for U.S. manufacturers by specified technical and production capabilities at national, regional, or local scale. Contact your local MEP Center to ask whether supplier scouting fits your project. NIST’s open supplier-scouting opportunities page, updated October 2, 2026, lists time-sensitive needs; check current opportunities rather than assuming a listing remains active.
Thomasnet and other capability-based searches
Thomasnet describes search filters for supplier capabilities, services, location, and certifications, as well as ways to request quotes. Its Made in America supplier search includes profiles, catalogs, certifications, and capability information. These details can help you find relevant candidates, but a profile does not confirm current qualification status, capacity, or low-volume terms.
For useful results, search by the manufacturing operation, material, and location—not only by the product name. For example, a search might combine a process such as CNC machining, injection molding, cut-and-sew, sheet-metal fabrication, or contract assembly with the relevant material and geographic radius. Directory coverage differs, so use more than one route for a critical or specialized need.

SBA Dynamic Small Business Search
The SBA’s Dynamic Small Business Search (DSBS) is a supplementary option if you specifically want to identify small-business vendors or have government-contracting requirements. It is not established as a general marketplace for small-batch contract manufacturing, so do not rely on it as your only search route.
Turn search results into comparable quotes
Send the same request for quotation (RFQ) and specifications to several plausible candidates. Consistent questions make it easier to compare the real cost and feasibility of each option.

- What is your minimum order quantity, and can you take the proposed first-run quantity?
- What are the unit prices at the initial quantity and likely repeat quantities?
- Are there nonrecurring engineering, setup, or tooling charges? Who owns the tooling and production files?
- Can you provide samples or make a pilot run? What are the costs and timing?
- What are the production lead time, delivery estimate, payment terms, and quote-validity period?
- At which U.S. facility will the work be performed? Are any operations subcontracted, and if so, where?
- What quality checks and documentation are included, and how will defects be handled?
Ask for shipping costs and compare total landed cost, not just the per-unit price. Make sure each quote uses the same specification, quantity, delivery destination, and assumptions.

Check that each candidate’s equipment, process, and experience fit your requirements. Request relevant references, samples, quality documentation, and facility details when they matter to the project. If a certification is essential, verify it with the issuing body rather than relying only on a directory entry or an unverified claim.

Before committing to a larger run, consider a controlled pilot if the product and process allow one. Put acceptance criteria, inspection responsibility, change control, defect remedies, delivery milestones, and ownership of tooling and files in writing. These terms help expose specification or process issues before they affect a larger order.
Choose based on fit, not directory size
No single directory is established as the best choice for every product category, and platform coverage figures do not show which supplier will accept your order. Compare manufacturers against the same practical criteria:
- Fit with the required process, materials, tolerances, and finish
- Minimum order quantity and ability to support a pilot
- Unit prices at relevant quantities, plus setup and tooling costs
- Lead time, communication, and delivery terms
- Quality evidence and relevant, verifiable certifications
- U.S. production location and any subcontracted operations
- Total landed cost and the written terms for defects, changes, and tooling
The strongest candidate is the one that can demonstrate a credible fit for your requirements and quantity—not simply the one with the lowest listed price or the largest directory profile.
