The launch offered a free upgrade to qualifying Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 devices, while new PCs with Windows 10 preinstalled were another option. This is a historical announcement: Windows 10 Home and Pro, among other listed editions, reached end of support on October 14, 2025.
When did Windows 10 become available?
Microsoft announced the July 29, 2015 availability date on June 1, 2015. The initial release covered PCs and tablets. In the announcement, Terry Myerson, then executive vice president of Microsoft’s Windows and Devices Group, said: “On July 29, you can get Windows 10 for PCs and tablets by taking advantage of the free upgrade offer, or on a new Windows 10 PC from your favorite retailer.” Microsoft’s June 1 announcement set out the date and launch options.
How could people get Windows 10 at launch?

The one-year upgrade offer was a launch promotion described by Microsoft in 2015; it is not a current offer. Eligibility depended on the existing device and Windows installation. Microsoft said people who reserved the upgrade would receive a taskbar notification when it was ready, because eligible devices were not all upgraded at once. The July 28, 2015 launch post described availability across 190 countries and explained the phased delivery.
Why do Microsoft’s Insider figures differ?
Microsoft’s June 1, 2015 announcement reported feedback from more than four million Windows Insiders. Its July 28 launch post reported feedback from five million Insiders. These are Microsoft’s reported figures from posts published at different points in the 2015 launch, not conflicting counts from a single measurement.

What is Windows 10’s support status now?
Windows 10’s broad consumer support period has ended. Microsoft states that Windows 10 version 22H2 and listed editions including Home and Pro reached end of support on October 14, 2025; version 22H2 was the final general availability release. After end of support, those editions no longer receive ordinary security updates. Microsoft provides information about Extended Security Updates (ESU), which are a security-update extension and not a restoration of ordinary product support.
