That story is not evidence that the typical user spends anywhere near that amount—or that the category currently earns $1 billion.
Who predicted the AI girlfriend industry could be worth $1 billion?
Greg Isenberg made the prediction in an April 9, 2024 post on X. PYMNTS reproduced the post, and Futurism reported on it, describing Isenberg as a former WeWork executive and then CEO of Late Checkout. PYMNTS’s April 2024 report and Futurism’s April 13, 2024 account provide the quoted wording and context.
Isenberg compared the opportunity with Match Group, citing a $9 billion market capitalization in his post, and wrote: “The market cap for Match Group is $9B. Someone will build the AI-version of Match Group and make $1B+.” The $9 billion was the comparison he cited in April 2024, not a current valuation; the $1 billion-plus figure was a forecast, not reported company revenue.
Are AI girlfriends really a billion-dollar industry?
The cited reporting does not establish that AI girlfriend apps—or AI companions as a whole—currently generate $1 billion in revenue. It supplies no independently verified, category-wide revenue figure. Isenberg was predicting what a future company might make, using an analogy to a dating-company business, rather than reporting a measured market result.

The analogy also does not make the categories interchangeable. Match Group operates dating services; an AI companion service sells interactions with software-generated characters. Revenue from dating platforms, broad AI tools, or emotional-support products would not by itself establish revenue for AI girlfriend apps. Market estimates that use different definitions should not be treated as equivalent.
How much do people spend on AI girlfriend apps?
The widely repeated $10,000-a-month figure came from Isenberg’s account of a conversation with one 24-year-old man in Miami. It is a second-hand report of that person’s claimed spending, not an audited payment record, survey result, or representative spending statistic. It cannot show how common such spending is, what a typical customer pays, or how much the category earns overall.

Futurism reported that the man used Candy.ai and Cupid.ai, interacted with multiple services, and valued voice notes and the ability to customize characters’ likes and dislikes. Those are details attributed to that user and those services at the time of the report—not independent product tests or confirmation of current features.
What are AI girlfriend chatbots?
AI girlfriend apps are conversational services designed to simulate a romantic or intimate relationship with a generated character. They are one part of a broader companion-app category. The labels are not a guarantee of any particular feature, level of realism, privacy practice, or service quality.

They also differ in purpose from general-purpose chatbots such as ChatGPT. PYMNTS contrasted general assistants with emotionally focused companion services such as Replika. A general chatbot may answer questions across many subjects; a companion app centers interaction on an ongoing persona or relationship. Emotional-support tools can overlap with companions, but are not automatically romantic or marketed as girlfriends.
PYMNTS discussed possible commercial integrations as part of the business case. That was analysis and speculation, not evidence that such integrations have produced significant revenue.

What does research say about AI companions and overuse?
A University of Surrey research release dated October 19, 2023, summarized research into AI friendship apps including Replika and Mitsuku. It reported associations among loneliness, fear of judgment, perceived AI sentience, wellbeing, and addictive app use among the users studied. The findings do not mean that every user becomes addicted, that all companion apps have the same effects, or that the apps cause the same outcome for everyone.
Study author Dr Valentina Pitardi, Senior Lecturer in Marketing at the University of Surrey, said: “We found that the instant gratification and the perceived wellbeing gained from using these apps increased addiction and app over-use.” This is the university’s account of that research, not a universal conclusion about all users or products. Why does a companion app’s future matter to users?
A relationship-simulating character and its conversation history depend on the platform that runs them. Amy Webb’s March 14, 2026 SXSW presentation framed the broader shift of comfort, validation, and companionship toward machines as “emotional outsourcing.” She also noted the practical dependency: an AI partner exists only while its platform remains available. A company can change or discontinue a service, so users should not assume a character or its history will remain accessible indefinitely. SXSW’s event site provides the presentation context.
