Tesla reportedly offered some early Cybertruck owners a free drive-unit replacement during service visits in 2024, describing it as part of a study to improve efficiency and reliability. The reporting did not establish a broad campaign to contact early buyers: the offer apparently came up at appointments owners had made for other reasons. Tesla later issued separate, VIN-specific actions involving rear drive units and drive inverters.
What Tesla reportedly offered early Cybertruck owners
On July 5, 2024, Drive Tesla reported that some early Cybertruck owners were offered a drive-unit replacement at no charge. The report said Tesla described the replacement as using “the latest production pedigree which is intended to improve efficiency and reliability.” That wording came from a Tesla Service message shared by Out of Spec’s Kyle Conner, rather than a statement from a named Tesla spokesperson. According to that report, the offer appeared during service appointments made for other reasons. It does not establish that Tesla broadly or proactively contacted all early Cybertruck buyers. The service message reportedly said the early replacement was not prompted by an identified vehicle concern and that the truck was safe to drive before replacement. Those are statements attributed to the message, not an independent safety finding.

Was the early replacement offer a recall?
The July 2024 offer was described as a study, not as a recall. Tesla’s later official actions were separate and had different scopes, component descriptions, and safety classifications.

The later recall support document identifies affected 2024 model-year Cybertrucks built from November 6, 2023, through July 30, 2024, for the inverter action, and describes replacement at no charge. Drive units and drive inverters are different components
“Electric motor” is an understandable shorthand, but Tesla’s documents refer to drive units and drive inverters as distinct components. The July report concerned a drive-unit replacement. The later safety recall concerned drive inverters; depending on the vehicle’s VIN, Tesla’s remedy may involve an inverter, a drive unit, or both. Do not assume that every truck covered by an inverter recall needs the same part replaced.

How Cybertruck owners can check whether their vehicle needs service
- Check the VIN through Tesla’s recall lookup. Use Tesla’s recall information page to check whether an official recall applies to your vehicle.
- Ask Tesla Service about the specific repair. Applicability and remedy are vehicle-specific in Tesla’s campaign and recall materials. Confirm whether the VIN calls for an inverter replacement, a drive-unit replacement, or another action.
- Follow the instructions for your vehicle. Do not infer that the July 2024 study offer applies to your truck based on age or build date alone; the report did not publish a comprehensive eligibility list.
Why a drive-unit replacement is a service repair
