If Gmail looks blue, first check where the color appears. A blue home-screen or app-drawer icon may come from Android’s themed-icon settings—or from a reported 2026 redesign rolling out to some Google Workspace icons. Blue labels or importance markers inside Gmail are separate features. Google’s reviewed Help pages do not confirm a universal change that turns every Gmail icon blue.
First, identify which Gmail element is blue
“Gmail icon” can mean several different things. The right explanation and setting depend on where you see the color:
- Home screen or app drawer: This is the app’s launcher icon. On supported Android devices, themed icons can take colors from the wallpaper and system theme. A redesigned icon rollout reported in 2026 is another possible explanation for some users.
- Inside the inbox: A blue label, compose button, or importance marker is part of Gmail’s interface, not the launcher icon. User reports about these elements describe separate cases and do not establish one cause for every account.
- Notification: A small icon shown with an alert is distinct from both the launcher icon and inbox controls. The available sources do not establish a universal setting for recoloring it.
Device matters, too: Pixel instructions are specific to Pixel phones, and Android settings on other manufacturers’ devices can differ. Gmail on iPhone and the web has different appearance controls.
Change the launcher icon on a Pixel
Pixel users can review icon appearance in the home-screen customization settings. Google’s instructions cover Pixel devices; labels and available choices can vary by device and software version.

- Touch and hold an empty area of the home screen.
- Open Wallpaper & style.
- Review the available home-screen icon style or color and themed-icon controls, then choose another appearance if one is offered.
Google documents the Pixel customization path in Pixel Help: Change wallpaper and style. If the icon’s color follows the wallpaper, changing the wallpaper or turning off themed icons—where that option is available—may change its appearance.
On other Android phones, check the launcher’s icon settings
Themed icons work only when the app and launcher support the feature. Android’s developer documentation explains that compatible launcher icons can be tinted using colors derived from the wallpaper and theme. Manufacturers and third-party launchers may offer different controls, so the Pixel menu path is not universal. See Android Developers: Adaptive icons for the technical explanation.

Look in your phone’s home-screen, wallpaper, theme, or icon settings for options such as themed icons or icon color. If you do not see such a control, your device or launcher may not provide one for Gmail.
What if Google’s icon redesign is the reason?
Android Central reported on May 18, 2026, that redesigned gradient icons for Gmail and other Workspace apps were beginning to roll out. That report makes a redesign one possible explanation for a changed launcher icon, but it does not establish why a particular person’s icon looks blue. Gmail’s theme does not recolor its launcher icon
Gmail’s Light, Dark, and System default theme choices affect the app’s background appearance; they are not the launcher-icon color control. Gmail Help explains the available theme options for Gmail on Android. On iPhone and iPad, Gmail’s appearance follows the device’s Dark Mode setting, as described in Gmail Help for iOS.
If the blue appears inside Gmail
Blue importance markers
A September 2026 Gmail Community answer from a Product Expert says importance markers can be hidden through Settings > Inbox > Importance markers > No markers, but their color cannot be customized. This is community guidance, not an official Google policy statement. It is a way to hide the markers, not recolor the Gmail app icon.

Labels, buttons, or other interface colors
Blue labels or compose controls inside Gmail are separate from the launcher icon. Community posts report different interface changes, but those reports do not establish that every user sees the same change or that one setting will restore a previous color. Changing the Gmail background theme affects the app’s background, not necessarily the color of individual controls.
