A .wsf file is a Windows Script File that Windows Script Host (WSH) can run. Unlike a script file that uses one scripting engine, a WSF can bring together multiple scripting engines and define multiple jobs; use wscript with /job:<identifier> to run a particular named job.
What a WSF file does
Windows Script Host provides an environment for running scripts written in supported scripting languages and working with object models. Microsoft lists .wsf alongside .vbs and .js as a common Windows script extension. A WSF is a container for script work that WSH can run, not a scripting language in its own right.
Its key packaging capability is that one file can use multiple scripting engines and perform multiple jobs. This lets a WSF group related work and allows a caller to select a named job. The exact engines available on a computer and whether its policies allow a script to run depend on that system’s configuration.
Microsoft’s wscript command documentation, last updated May 22, 2023, lists Windows 10, Windows 11, and Windows Server 2016, 2019, 2022, and 2025 as applicable systems. That documentation scope is not a guarantee that every installation has the same script engines or permits script execution.

Run a WSF file
Use wscript followed by the WSF file path. For example, from Command Prompt:
wscript "C:ScriptsExample.wsf"Replace the example path with the actual location of the file. Microsoft says this task does not require administrative credentials and recommends using a non-administrative account as a security best practice. Only run scripts from sources you trust; options such as batch mode or a time limit do not make an untrusted script safe.

Run a specific named job
Pass /job:<identifier> to run a named job defined in the WSF. The identifier must match a job in that file; this option selects a job rather than creating one.
wscript /job:DailyTask "C:ScriptsExample.wsf"In this example, DailyTask is the job identifier. Microsoft documents the named-job switch in its wscript command reference. If the identifier does not match a job in the file, the command cannot select the intended job.

Useful wscript options
These options change how WSH launches or runs a script. Use only the option that fits the task:
/bruns in batch mode without alerts, scripting errors, or input prompts./iruns in interactive mode./t:<number>sets a run-time limit in seconds. Microsoft documents a maximum of 32,767 seconds and says the default is no time limit. A timeout limits duration; it is not a security control./e:<engine>specifies the scripting engine for a custom file extension. It does not permanently associate that extension with the engine./dand/xare debugger-related options.

wscript /t:60 "C:ScriptsExample.wsf"Microsoft documents these switches and their behavior in the wscript command reference. The /e option concerns a custom extension, not a way to change how a WSF’s named job is selected.
When a WSF will not run
A valid command does not by itself establish that a script can run on a particular computer. WSH policy, the engines installed or available, the file path, and the script’s own requirements can affect the outcome. Check that the path is correct and that the selected job identifier exists. If a custom extension is involved, /e:<engine> tells WSH which engine to use for that invocation; it does not create a lasting file association.
