For playback, use a Dailymotion Player SDK rather than treating the metadata endpoint as an embed player.
Upload and publish a video
The standard API v2 flow has three stages after authentication: request an upload session, send the file to the returned upload URL, then create the video resource. The create request is separate from the file transfer. Follow Dailymotion’s video upload guide for the current request details.
- Authorize. Obtain an access token with the
video.managescope. Send it as a Bearer token on the API requests. - Request an upload session. Send
POST /v2/files/upload_sessions. The response provides anupload_urlfor the file and aprogress_urlfor tracking the transfer. - Transfer the video file. POST the file to the returned upload URL as
multipart/form-data, using thefilefield. The response includes a file URL for the video-creation request. - Create the video. Send a request to
/v2/profiles/{profile_id}/videoswith the file URL and required metadata:title,category,visibility, andis_for_kids.
The guide describes visibility choices as public, private, or password-protected. A password is required when using password-protected visibility. Studio content defaults generally do not carry over to API uploads, except for geo restriction, so specify the settings you want in the create request.
Choose a file-transfer path

Upload limits depend on account type and settings; the API guide does not establish one universal numeric maximum. Its descriptions of upload URL expiration differ between the overview and best-practices sections, so build in the documented retry or session-reacquisition path and confirm current behavior for your account.

Update an existing video
To change metadata, send PATCH https://api.dailymotion.com/v2/videos/{VIDEO_ID} with the video.manage scope. Include only the fields you want to change; omitted fields remain untouched. A successful request returns 204 No Content. See the edit video metadata reference for the field list and validation rules.
Editable fields include title, description, category, visibility, tags, hashtags, language, and other video settings. The documented title length is 1–255 characters, and descriptions can be up to 3,000 characters.

Field-specific constraints
is_explicitcannot be unset after it has been set.- Comments cannot be enabled on a video marked as made for kids.
- Stitching requires a public video.
- Password-protected visibility requires a password.
Check the reference for constraints on specialized fields before building them into an update. Dailymotion’s metadata-editing documentation states: “Everything else stays untouched.”
Replace a video’s source
If you need to replace the file while keeping the existing video and its metadata, the video must belong to the profile and the account must have source-replacement rights enabled. Upload the new source, then PATCH the existing video with source.file_url. Dailymotion says this preserves existing metadata and reprocesses the new source. Retrieve video details by ID
For a video’s metadata, call GET /v2/videos/{id} with the video.read scope. Use the comma-separated fields parameter to request only the fields your application needs. The video retrieval reference lists fields including title, description, category, processing status, visibility, source, thumbnail, publication details, and video URL.
Embed and play a video in an application
Retrieving video metadata and playing a video are separate tasks. For embedding playback or controlling a player programmatically, use Dailymotion’s Player SDKs for web, Android, and iOS. The API overview identifies those SDKs as the tools for player integration; a video metadata response alone is not the player implementation.
