The ASUS B85M-E/CSM is a micro-ATX motherboard for an existing Intel LGA1150 desktop, built around the B85 chipset and DDR3 memory. It can make sense as a like-for-like replacement when the rest of the system is worth keeping, but it is not a modern-platform upgrade: its documented storage is SATA, memory tops out at 32 GB, and CPU compatibility must be checked by exact model and BIOS. ASUS’s available manual is labeled B85M-E, so verify the exact /CSM board and revision before buying or applying variant-specific specifications.

What the ASUS B85M-E/CSM is—and what this review can establish

This is a specification-led review of a legacy micro-ATX board, not a hands-on performance review. The available evidence is ASUS documentation for the B85M-E and a Kingston memory listing that explicitly names the B85M-E/CSM. ASUS’s support page likewise identifies B85M-E rather than a separate /CSM support entry. The sources therefore establish the documented B85M-E feature set and corroborate the /CSM name and broad memory capacity, but do not establish whether every /CSM revision is identical.

For a used board, compare the seller’s photos with the board’s printed model and revision, connector layout, BIOS information, and the CPU support list. The ASUS manual is dated November 1, 2013, and later manuals appear on the support page; confirm that the documentation and BIOS apply to the specific board in hand.

ASUS B85M-E/CSM specifications

Feature Documented specification
Form factor Micro-ATX; exact dimensions and /CSM-specific physical differences are not established in the cited source text.
Socket and chipset LGA1150 socket; Intel B85 Express chipset (ASUS, 2013).
Processor families 4th-generation Intel Core i7, Core i5, Core i3, Pentium, and Celeron families; support for an individual processor depends on ASUS’s CPU support data and potentially BIOS version.
Memory Four DDR3 DIMM sockets; maximum 32 GB; dual-channel; non-ECC, unbuffered; listed speeds 1600, 1333, and 1066 MHz (ASUS, 2013). Kingston’s B85M-E/CSM listing also reports four sockets and a 32 GB maximum.
Storage Two SATA 3 Gb/s connectors and four SATA 6 Gb/s connectors (ASUS, 2013).
Expansion One PCIe 3.0/2.0 x16 slot, one PCIe 2.0 x16-length slot running at x4, one PCIe 2.0 x1 slot, and one PCI slot.
Rear display outputs D-Sub, DVI, HDMI, and DisplayPort. The manual lists maximums of 1920 × 2000 at 60 Hz for DVI and D-Sub, 2560 × 1600 at 60 Hz for HDMI, and 4096 × 2160 at 24 Hz or 3840 × 2160 at 60 Hz for DisplayPort; actual output depends on a supported processor with integrated graphics.
Networking and audio Realtek 8111F Gigabit LAN and Realtek ALC887-VD2 HD audio codec.
USB Four USB 3.0 total: two rear ports and two through an internal header. Eight USB 2.0 total: four rear ports and four through internal headers.
Original box contents ASUS lists two SATA cables and an I/O shield. Their presence is not assured with used or incomplete listings.

What CPU is compatible with the ASUS B85M-E/CSM?

ASUS describes the B85M-E as supporting 4th-generation Intel Core i7, i5, and i3 processors, along with Pentium and Celeron families. That family-level description is not enough to confirm a specific CPU: consult the ASUS B85M-E support page and its CPU support information for the exact processor and any required BIOS version. Do not treat an LGA1150 socket match alone as proof of compatibility.

Because the support page is for B85M-E rather than a distinct B85M-E/CSM page, verify the board’s exact printed model and revision before relying on a listed BIOS or CPU entry.

How much RAM does it support?

The ASUS manual specifies four DDR3 DIMMs with a maximum capacity of 32 GB, dual-channel operation, and non-ECC unbuffered memory. The listed memory speeds are 1600, 1333, and 1066 MHz. ASUS notes that modules rated at 1600 MHz or higher using XMP operate at a maximum 1600 MHz transfer rate under the chipset limitation. Kingston’s B85M-E/CSM memory configurator independently lists four sockets and 32 GB maximum, but check the module’s exact compatibility and the specific board before purchase.

Does the ASUS B85M-E/CSM support NVMe?

The cited ASUS manual documents six SATA connectors—two at 3 Gb/s and four at 6 Gb/s—and does not document an onboard M.2 slot. Do not buy this board on the assumption that it has native M.2 or NVMe support. A PCIe adapter may be a separate possibility, but the cited documentation does not establish boot support, compatibility, or performance for that setup.

Which graphics card slot does it have?

ASUS lists one PCIe x16 slot, plus a second x16-length slot that operates at x4, a PCIe x1 slot, and a legacy PCI slot. Check the board manual and physical layout before choosing a card: the secondary full-length slot is not an x16-electrical slot, and an installed card’s fit can depend on neighboring slots and case clearance.

Is the B85M-E/CSM worth replacing or upgrading?

It is most defensible as a replacement for a failed board in a working LGA1150 system, especially if the existing DDR3 memory, processor, storage, and case are still suitable. Buying another used board does not modernize the platform; whether it is sensible depends on the exact board condition, CPU/BIOS match, what is included, and the cost of replacing the system with a newer platform. Current stock, prices, and comparative failure rates are not established here.
