No—the OnePlus 8 Pro does not have true X-ray vision. Its 5MP Color Filter camera was unusually sensitive to near-infrared light, and the Photochrom mode could reveal shapes behind some thin plastics that let that light through. The effect was selective, not a way to see through every object or human tissue, and OnePlus later restricted the original behavior through software updates.
Which OnePlus 8 Pro camera created the effect?
The OnePlus 8 Pro had four rear cameras: main, ultrawide, telephoto, and a separate 5MP Color Filter camera. In the phone’s native Photochrom mode, that fourth camera’s sensitivity to near-infrared light could produce images that looked as if the phone were seeing through certain objects. DPReview described the camera and the effect in May 2020.
The memorable demonstrations prompted phrases such as “OnePlus 8 Pro X-ray vision,” but “X-ray” is only a visual analogy. This was a camera feature on the OnePlus 8 Pro, not an X-ray imaging system.
Why could Photochrom see through some plastic?
Visible light and infrared are different parts of the electromagnetic spectrum. Some plastics that look black or opaque to people allow near-infrared light to pass through. The Color Filter camera could detect some of that light, revealing outlines or components inside an object.

According to TechPP’s account of the demonstrations, the effect appeared with some thin plastic housings, including those on TV remotes, computer keyboards, and speakers. It depended on the material: metal and dense coverings blocked the effect. Photochrom was therefore not a universal see-through mode, and it could not see through people as an X-ray machine does.
What changed after privacy concerns?
After users raised privacy concerns—including reports that the effect could reveal details through certain clothing—OnePlus said it planned a software update to disable the near-infrared camera’s original behavior, according to DPReview.
Android Authority later quoted OnePlus describing the revised Photochrom filter: “The updated Photochrom filter uses data about the lighting conditions collected by the Color Filter camera to generate photos with the main camera.” Read Android Authority’s report on the change.
As a result, the original demonstrations do not establish what every OnePlus 8 Pro can do today. Behavior depends on the phone’s OxygenOS version and region. If you have the phone, check its installed software and test only objects you own or have permission to photograph; do not assume an old demonstration applies to your device.

Is the OnePlus 8 Pro’s Photochrom camera real X-ray vision?
No. The feature used near-infrared light and worked only when a material allowed enough of that light through. It was not medical or security X-ray imaging, did not see through all materials, and was restricted by software after privacy concerns.
