It was announced on October 26, 2020, when the LF AI Foundation and ODPi said they would combine their communities under one organization. The announcement described interoperability and closer collaboration as goals—not as independently verified results.
What combined to form the LF AI & Data Foundation?
In its October 26, 2020 announcement, the Linux Foundation described LF AI as an ecosystem for open-source artificial intelligence, machine learning, and deep learning. ODPi, by contrast, focused on accelerating the open ecosystem for big-data solutions. The two organizations said they would come together under the LF AI & Data Foundation, bringing open AI and data communities into a shared organizational home. The Linux Foundation’s announcement, distributed by PR Newswire, is the primary source for the formation details.
The release framed the combination as a way to support AI, data, and analytics projects, encourage collaboration, and make integration and interoperability easier across projects. Those were the stated aims of the announcement; the release itself does not demonstrate that the goals were achieved.
Which projects and groups were included?
The announcement said ODPi projects Egeria and OpenDS4All would become hosted projects under the new foundation. It also said BI and AI would become a committee. The planned structure included a Technical Advisory Council and committees such as Trusted AI and BI & AI. The release said hosted projects would retain open technical governance and collaborate with other projects in the foundation.

#1 Best Overall
LF AI Executive Director Dr. Ibrahim Haddad described the move as a natural way to bring open AI and data communities together for better interoperability and closer collaboration. That was Haddad’s explanation of the motivation and expected benefits in the October 26, 2020 announcement, not an independent assessment of the combination’s impact.
What does the foundation do today?
The foundation’s current official overview describes LF AI & Data as a Linux Foundation umbrella foundation supporting open-source innovation in AI and data. It says its mission is to build and support an open community. The organization also describes services for hosted projects that include membership and funding administration, ecosystem development, legal support, communications, events, trademark management, export-control filings, and compliance scans.
Rank #2
Its project directory lists work across AI, machine learning, data management, and infrastructure. Examples shown in the directory include Egeria, OPEA, OpenBytes, Horovod, Kedro, JanusGraph, Kompute, and LakeSoul. The directory is the place to check a project’s current description and hosting status; the 2020 announcement only establishes the launch-era plans for Egeria and OpenDS4All.
What do the foundation’s current figures mean?
When accessed in 2026, the foundation homepage displayed 67 projects, more than 200 million lines of code, more than 331,000 commits, more than 2,920 contributing organizations, 100,000 contributors, and nine technical working groups. These are counters published by the foundation, not independently audited statistics. The homepage does not state a measurement date for each figure, so they should be read as figures displayed at access rather than precise totals for a defined reporting period. See the foundation homepage.
Rank #3
The October 2020 release reported a different set of launch-era figures: 22 projects, more than 60 companies, 20 universities, and more than 1,300 active developers in the combined foundation; it also said LF AI then had 25 members and 20 technical projects. These counts should not be treated as a direct before-and-after comparison with today’s homepage counters because their definitions and measurement dates are not aligned.
How can an organization participate?
The foundation’s membership page says corporate members of LF AI & Data must also be corporate members of The Linux Foundation. It describes membership levels and organizational participation benefits. Eligibility and terms can change, so companies considering membership should consult the live page for current requirements.
Rank #4
How should the headline’s “fastest-growing” claim be read?
“Fastest-growing” appeared in the 2020 announcement’s promotional framing. The available announcement and the foundation’s current self-reported homepage counters do not establish a comparative industry ranking or an independently measured growth rate. The evidence supports describing the combination and the foundation’s stated mission, but not presenting the superlative as a verified industry finding.
