The Linux Foundation announced a live Twitter Q&A with Arpit Joshipura for Friday, March 31, 2017, from 10:00 to 10:45 a.m. Pacific Daylight Time. It was the first session in the Foundation’s planned monthly #AskLF chat series, focused on open source networking and Joshipura’s professional background.

When and how to join the #AskLF chat

The Linux Foundation’s March 21, 2017 announcement asked participants to follow @linuxfoundation and submit questions with the hashtag #AskLF during the scheduled session. The Foundation said hosts would take over its Twitter account for the chat. It also encouraged people to prepare questions in advance.

  • Date: Friday, March 31, 2017
  • Time: 10:00–10:45 a.m. PDT
  • Host: Arpit Joshipura
  • Hashtag: #AskLF

This is a historical event announcement, not a notice of an upcoming session. The announcement describes the planned logistics, but does not establish attendance or which questions Joshipura answered.

What the Q&A was expected to cover

The chat was intended to address the open source networking ecosystem and Joshipura’s career, rather than function as a personal-topic, Reddit-style AMA. The announcement suggested questions such as:

  • “What is the goal of SDN?”
  • “What can a network admin do in an SDN environment?”
  • “How can my company investigate the benefits of SDN/NFV?”
  • “How does The Linux Foundation help the open source community implement open networking?”

SDN means software-defined networking; NFV means network functions virtualization. In this event’s framing, the questions connect technology concepts and organizational adoption to the Foundation’s role in supporting open networking projects.

Why Arpit Joshipura was the first host

Joshipura was the Linux Foundation’s General Manager of Networking & Orchestration when the event was announced. The Foundation had announced his appointment on December 8, 2016, describing his remit as helping harmonize the open source networking ecosystem across projects and the stack. In that appointment release, Executive Director Jim Zemlin said, “Open source is the linchpin for massive transformation in the networking industry, similar to the server market of two decades ago.”

The Foundation’s staff profile describes Joshipura’s work across networking, orchestration, edge and IoT, and lists projects including ONAP, OPNFV, OpenDaylight, FD.io, Open vSwitch, DPDK, OpenSwitch and Akraino. That background explains why the launch chat emphasized open networking and SDN/NFV.

How the chat connected to Open Networking Summit

The Foundation promoted the Twitter Q&A as a lead-in to the upcoming Open Networking Summit in Santa Clara. Its announcement said Joshipura would join keynote panels with Linux Foundation Executive Director Jim Zemlin, ON.Lab/ONF Executive Director Guru Parulkar and others, and encouraged readers to attend the summit after the online discussion.
