Which? reported that it found a password security issue in the Smart Life app and that Tuya fixed it. That report concerns the app issue Which? examined; it does not establish the security status of every Tuya-enabled device.
What security issue did Tuya fix?
Which? reported that “Tuya, which maintains the app, responded to us and fixed a password security issue in the app we found.” Read Which?’s report. The published account identifies the issue as a password security problem in Smart Life, but does not provide a technical description or a named quantitative measure of its severity.
Which? also said it had no other security concerns about the app at the time of publication. It noted that it had raised questions about Tuya’s privacy policy and was still clarifying them. That is a time-bounded assessment by Which?, not a current audit or a finding about all Tuya products.
How can researchers report a vulnerability to Tuya?
Tuya operates a public Security Response Center, TuyaSRC, which it describes as the central liaison with its security team. The page invites security researchers and partners to report vulnerabilities and lists sec@tuya.com as a contact. Tuya describes activities including vulnerability detection and resolution, security communications, incident recovery, and collaboration through a bug bounty program. These are descriptions of Tuya’s process; the page does not establish a response time or document the handling of any particular report.

What security protections does Tuya say it provides?
Tuya’s security overview says its smart hardware solutions use secure-by-design and secure-by-default principles, end-to-end authentication and encryption, and protections for firmware and over-the-air updates. It also describes a vulnerability bounty program. These are Tuya’s company statements, not independent test results for every device, app, or implementation built on its technology. A platform capability alone cannot confirm that a particular finished product is configured or maintained securely.
Who is responsible for security information on Tuya-powered products?
Tuya’s PSTI support guidance, last updated December 10, 2024, distinguishes platform capabilities from the responsibilities of the customer making the end product. It says customers must conduct their own testing and publish the product’s security-update support period and a public contact for reporting security issues. The guidance says Tuya OS 3.3 and above can support meeting technical PSTI requirements, but this is not legal advice or proof that every product using Tuya technology complies.

What does broader IoT platform research say about Tuya?
A 2023 study by Bhaskar Tejaswi, Mohammad Mannan, and Amr Youssef evaluated 52 IoT management platforms and reported vulnerabilities in 33; it said vulnerabilities in 17 could lead to platform-wide attacks. The paper does not name Tuya, so its aggregate results are not evidence that Tuya was affected. Its testing ran from January 2021 through June 2022 and should not be treated as a current audit of any platform.
