Starting with GNOME 49, Showtime replaced it; GNOME now lists Showtime in its app catalog as Video Player. The current app is aimed at straightforward viewing of local video files, while older Totem documentation describes features that should not automatically be assumed to exist in its replacement.
What GNOME Videos means today
GNOME 49’s release notes state: “In GNOME 49, Showtime replaces the long-standing Totem as the default GNOME video player app.” They also distinguish the applications’ technology foundations: Showtime is built on GTK 4 and Libadwaita, while Totem was based on GTK 3. The name change explains why older guides may call the player Totem or GNOME Videos even though GNOME’s current catalog entry is Video Player.
GNOME’s current Video Player page includes “Showtime” among the app’s keywords. It reports version 50.0, released March 14, 2026. App versions and distribution listings can change, so check the current pages when following installation instructions.
What the current Video Player offers
GNOME presents Video Player as a simple way to watch movie and video files. Its listed features include:
#1 Best Overall
- Live Boot: Simply plug the USB drive into your computer, select the USB drive as your boot device, and experience Linux Mint without installation. This allows you to test the OS and its features before making any changes to your system.
- Install Option: Once you've tested and decided to keep Linux Mint, you can easily install it on your computer directly from the USB drive.
- Pre-installed software like LibreOffice for office tasks, a capable web browser (Firefox), email client (Thunderbird), and multimedia tools. This minimizes the need for additional downloads, saving you time and effort.
- Resource Efficiency: Designed to run efficiently on a variety of hardware configurations. It demands fewer system resources compared to some other operating systems, making it an excellent choice for older computers or devices with limited hardware specifications.
- Compatible with PC/Laptop/Desktop brands - Dell, HP, Sony, Lenovo, Samsung, Acer, Toshiba & more. Minimum system requirements 4 GB RAM Dual-Core Processor (2 GHz) 20 GB of free disk space
- Playback controls that fade out of view while you watch.
- Fullscreen playback.
- Adjustable playback speed.
- Support for choosing among multiple language and subtitle tracks.
- Screenshot capture.
These are the features GNOME currently advertises; they are not a complete compatibility specification. The current GNOME and Flathub summaries do not provide a comprehensive list of supported codecs and containers, so they are not enough to confirm that a particular file will play.
How to install it
GNOME’s app page directs users to Flathub. At the time reflected by the listing, Flathub identifies The GNOME Project as publisher, describes the app as free, and lists x86_64 and aarch64 architectures. Availability and package details can vary with the listing and the Linux distribution.

Flathub’s version 50.0 notes say that videos with partially missing plugins can now be attempted anyway. That means the app may try to open some files despite an incomplete plugin situation; it is not a promise that every such file will play.
What older Totem guides do—and do not—tell you
Legacy Totem help documents opening video files and streaming media from the internet, along with controls for playback speed, volume, aspect ratio, language and subtitles, and screenshot capture. It also covers DVD and VCD playback, preferences, and troubleshooting. Those documents describe Totem, not necessarily the current Showtime-based Video Player.

- PHYSICAL USB FLASH DRIVE – Contains the bootable Tails USB image for compatible 64-bit x86-64 desktop and laptop computers.
- GNOME DESKTOP – Provides the official GNOME desktop environment with access to applications, files, workspaces, and system settings.
- PORTABLE LIVE SYSTEM – Starts from the USB flash drive for installation or evaluation without replacing the computer’s existing operating system.
- HARDWARE REQUIREMENTS – Requires a computer capable of starting from USB; 3 GB RAM is recommended for smooth operation, and hardware support varies.
- OPEN-SOURCE INSTALLATION MEDIA – Debian-based open-source operating system supplied with printed initial-start instructions.
In particular, Totem’s legacy DVD/VCD instructions do not establish that the current app supports DVD or VCD playback. If you need that capability—or rely on another older Totem function—look for documentation that explicitly covers the current Video Player version before depending on it.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is GNOME Video Player the right choice?
It is a reasonable option to consider if you want GNOME’s current, GNOME-directed app for ordinary local video viewing and value its advertised fullscreen, speed, screenshot, and track-selection controls. If your decision depends on a specific media format, optical-disc playback, or a feature mentioned only in Totem documentation, confirm that exact requirement separately: the current official summaries do not establish those capabilities.
