Possibly, but there is no confirmed delay. Sony has said it has not decided when to launch its next console or what it will cost. Xbox leadership has described memory shortages as a continuing constraint and said Microsoft is rethinking aspects of Project Helix, but has not announced a delay or a consumer release date. The shortage makes higher costs, tighter launch supply, or schedule changes plausible—not established outcomes.

What Sony and Microsoft have actually said

Sony: PS6 timing and price remain undecided

In a May 8, 2026 report, GameSpot quoted Sony president and CEO Hiroki Totoki: “We have not yet decided on at what timing we will launch the new console, or at what prices.” Totoki also said Sony expected memory prices to remain very high in fiscal year 2027 if supply stayed short, adding that the company would “think carefully about what we will do” under that assumption. These are statements about uncertainty and planning—not confirmation that Sony has delayed the PS6. GameSpot

Xbox: Project Helix planning is affected, but no delay was announced

Windows Central reported on June 11, 2026 that Xbox chief strategy officer Matthew Ball called the memory situation “the crisis,” saying it was not yet improving, its effects would last longer, and it would constrain the category. The report says Microsoft is rethinking aspects of Project Helix; it does not give a consumer launch date or say the console has been delayed. Windows Central

Why DRAM supply could affect console plans

TrendForce’s July 30, 2026 outlook describes DRAM supply as tight amid demand from AI infrastructure, high-bandwidth memory (HBM) production, and rising memory content per server. TrendForce estimated a DRAM sufficiency ratio of approximately -1% to -2% for 2026; this is an industry-wide supply-demand estimate, not a console-specific shortage or proof that either manufacturer cannot obtain components. It expects new capacity planned for 2027 to make a substantial contribution mainly in 2028. TrendForce

For console makers, the practical issue is not simply whether memory exists, but what it costs, how much can be secured, and when. Higher component costs can pressure hardware margins and leave less room for discounts. Companies could absorb the cost, set a higher launch price, limit initial supply, revise specifications or commercial plans, or move timing. Those are possible business responses, not reported decisions by Sony or Microsoft.

What the reported release windows do—and do not—show

Reports and leaks have floated possible dates, but none establish a company-confirmed schedule:

The quality of the CPU memory controller (IMC) and the version from the BIOS of motherboard may both potentially affect the operating frequency of the memory.
  • 2027–2028: A March 11, 2026 TrendForce article recounted a PS6 window attributed to Unwire HK citing Moore’s Law Is Dead. TrendForce did not present it as a Sony announcement. TrendForce
  • Late 2027 or holiday 2027: TechSpot reported these as expectations and a leaker’s claim, respectively. It said there was no concrete evidence for the proposed delay. TechSpot
  • 2029: The evidence summarized here does not establish this as an official date or a confirmed revised plan.

A reported window, a leak, a market forecast, and a company announcement are different kinds of evidence. A possible launch year should not be treated as a promise unless Sony or Microsoft confirms it.

How much weight to give the cost forecasts

TrendForce’s December 2, 2025 console analysis forecast global game-console shipments would decline 4.4% year over year in 2026. That is a dated forecast, not a final count of 2026 shipments and not a forecast specifically of PS6 or Project Helix sales. The same analysis projected that memory modules could represent 21–23% of Switch 2 hardware costs in 2026, and reported that Sony and Microsoft anticipated memory costs exceeding 35% of total bill of materials by 2026. These are projections and reported expectations in that analysis, not verified realized costs for new consoles. TrendForce

These figures help explain why memory pricing could matter to console economics; they do not quantify either company’s next-generation memory allocation, unit cost, or launch inventory. Component-cost pressure can influence a launch decision without proving a production shortfall or a schedule change.

What would count as evidence of a real delay?

A stronger case would require a direct, attributable statement that a planned console schedule changed because of memory procurement, or a company announcement setting or revising a launch window. So far, Sony’s reported position is that timing and price are undecided; the cited Xbox coverage describes memory as a planning constraint without confirming a consumer schedule. Until a company supplies that missing link, “could be delayed” is accurate, while “has been delayed” is not.
