The 16-inch Samsung Galaxy Book4 Edge can feel exceptionally quick in native ARM64 apps, but its Snapdragon X Elite does not make every Windows program or game equally fast—or compatible. HotHardware’s July 2024 testing found strong productivity and a 15-hour video-playback result under a specific brightness test, alongside weaker sustained or emulated workloads and uneven game support.
What configuration did HotHardware test?
Zak Killian’s HotHardware review, published July 25, 2024, tested a 16-inch Galaxy Book4 Edge with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X Elite X1E-84-100. The results below describe that review-period configuration and software; they should not be treated as guarantees for current Windows builds, drivers, or game compatibility. How fast is the Galaxy Book4 Edge?
Native ARM64 apps
The reviewer found the laptop especially responsive in native ARM64 productivity software, including Microsoft Office and Edge. Killian described performance in native ARM64 apps such as browsers, Office, Photoshop, and 7-Zip as “explosive” for the system’s size and power envelope. This is a statement about those applications and the tested system, not a promise that every workload will perform similarly.
Short tests versus sustained work
The review reports a strong result in a short Geekbench 6 run, while cautioning that a short benchmark gives the processor time to cool between runs. Longer work can therefore present a different picture. In a multi-core Cinebench R23 comparison, the Galaxy Book4 Edge trailed Qualcomm’s 80 W desktop reference setup; Killian suspected a power or thermal limitation, but the review did not establish a measured power limit as the cause.

AI benchmark context
In the review’s computer-vision benchmark, the Snapdragon X Elite NPU scored at least three times higher than the competing CPU and NPU results in that particular test set. That result is specific to the benchmark and comparison systems; it does not mean all AI tasks run three times faster.
What does Samsung’s software add?
The tested laptop included Samsung applications styled around One UI. Samsung Settings was important for system controls: the reviewer used it to change battery-protection options and power profiles. Although the selected profile did not appear as a changed profile in Windows, the reviewer observed differences in performance and battery life.

Display controls were split between Windows and Samsung’s utility. Windows settings offered color-profile changes, while Auto mode was set through Samsung’s app. Killian preferred Natural mode for general use, finding Vivid visibly oversaturated; that is a subjective viewing preference, not a measured display-quality result.
The review characterized Samsung’s bundled applications at the time as 32-bit x86 programs, while Microsoft applications were ARM64 native. That is a historical observation from the 2024 test, not a statement about current versions of those apps.

Can it run Windows apps and games?
Emulated x86 software
Windows on Arm can run many x86 applications through emulation, but the review notes that emulation may affect performance. Buyers should check their essential programs individually: a benchmark showing excellent native ARM64 performance cannot establish how a specific emulated app will behave.
Game compatibility and performance
In the July 2024 tests, games running through Prism emulation had mixed outcomes. Some older or lighter games were playable, while others showed stuttering, crashes, anti-cheat incompatibility, or unsupported CPU instructions. Auto Super Resolution, an NPU-based upscaler described in the review, was not consistently available across the tested games; the reviewer also noted visual artifacts and a latency cost when it was used. These are observations from the tested games and software at that time, not a current compatibility list.

For gaming as a primary use, Killian’s verdict was cautious: the experience was inferior to a Steam Deck OLED, and the reviewer did not favor a Snapdragon laptop for on-the-go gaming at that time. The review also contrasted the Galaxy Book4 Edge with the MSI Prestige 16 AI Evo, describing the MSI as stronger for graphics and x86-64 compatibility, while the Snapdragon laptop had the stated Copilot+ feature advantage at review time. That comparison is time-bound; current models and software may differ.

HotHardware reported 900 minutes, or 15 hours, of video playback after calibrating laptops to 105–110 nits of screen brightness. This is a result from one video-playback test, not an all-day-use guarantee. The review compared the result with another laptop but noted that the comparison machine had a larger battery, so the figures do not isolate processor efficiency.

The review’s overall judgment favors the Galaxy Book4 Edge as a portable work or school laptop for someone who values a large, vibrant AMOLED display, low noise, strong native-app responsiveness, and the tested battery runtime. Its weaker fit is a buyer whose workflow depends on particular x86 applications, sustained heavy workloads, or frequent gaming.
Before choosing it, identify the applications and games you rely on and verify their Windows-on-Arm support and performance for the exact model and current software version. Also compare sustained workloads—not only short benchmark scores—and weigh the display, battery test conditions, heat, and noise against your own priorities.
