It is designed for business technologists exploring application interoperability and developers beginning to build FDC3-enabled applications. The Linux Foundation Education course listing describes it as a 90-minute course.
What is FDC3?
FDC3 is an open standard for interoperability between applications on a financial desktop. The FDC3 2.1 introduction describes its mission as developing protocols and taxonomies so applications in financial workflows can interoperate in a plug-and-play manner without prior bilateral agreements. In practical terms, it defines shared ways for applications to request actions and exchange business context.
FDC3 defines interfaces and conventions; it is not itself a complete desktop platform. A desktop agent implementation may offer additional facilities, but those are not automatically supplied just by using the standard.
How FDC3 connects desktop applications
FDC3’s main building blocks are the Desktop Agent API, intents, context data, and the App Directory. The project overview also describes agent bridging as part of the wider landscape.

Desktop Agent
A Desktop Agent acts as a launcher and message router for applications within its domain. An application can ask the agent to raise an intent with context; the agent can help find or launch an application able to handle that action.
Intents and context data
An intent is a standardized description of an action an application wants another application to perform. Context data carries the business information needed for that action. Applications may also share context directly so that multiple tools can follow the security or other topic a user is working on.

App Directory
The REST-based App Directory supports application identity and discovery. Together with the agent and shared conventions, it helps applications locate and communicate with one another without each pair requiring a separate integration agreement.
What LFEL1000 covers
Linux Foundation Education describes LFEL1000 as an entry-level course for business technologists who want to adopt application interoperability and developers who want to build applications using FDC3. Its published learning outcomes include explaining what FDC3 is, how its common framework defines and shares contextual information, the standard’s components and landscape, and ways to contribute.

Rank #3
The course listing says it takes 90 minutes. The provider also says completion prepares learners to apply standards for smoother data transfer, reduced downtime and errors, greater efficiency, and an enhanced user experience. Those are stated course outcomes, not independently measured results.
Who should take the course?
- Business technologists: useful if you need to understand what application interoperability means in a financial desktop workflow and how FDC3 fits into adoption discussions.
- Developers new to FDC3: a starting point for learning the standard’s concepts before implementing integrations.
- Experienced implementers: the introductory course may be too high-level if your immediate goal is to build and publish FDC3-enabled applications; the catalogue lists a separate development course for that purpose.
LFEL1000 and the related FDC3 course
The Linux Foundation Education catalogue identifies two relevant courses. The figures below are listing details retrieved in 2026; prices and availability can change, so check the official catalogue for current terms.
| Course | Focus | Duration listed | Price and eligibility listed |
|---|---|---|---|
| Introduction to FDC3 (LFEL1000) | Entry-level understanding of FDC3 for business technologists and developers | 90 minutes | Free |
| Developing Solutions with FDC3 (LFD237) | Building and publishing FDC3-enabled applications | Not stated in the catalogue | $299; free seats available to FINOS members |
What FDC3 does not provide by itself
FDC3 standardizes interoperable interfaces, but it does not standardize every capability a financial desktop might need. The API overview gives workspace management, user identity and single sign-on, entitlements, and the user experience for resolving applications as examples of features a complete desktop agent might provide outside the current FDC3 standard. Organizations should therefore distinguish adopting FDC3 from choosing or configuring a platform that supplies those additional capabilities.
