Huawei’s Ben Yang presented ONAP as the orchestration platform behind a cross-operator VPN demonstration: Vodafone and China Mobile each used an ONAP instance to coordinate optical transport and SD-WAN, then connected their instances to provision service across both network layers and operator boundaries. The demonstration was announced on September 26, 2018, as an ONAP Casablanca use case.

Who was Ben Yang, and what was the presentation?

The Linux Foundation Open Source Networking Days Shanghai event listing identifies Ben Yang as Huawei’s Senior Marketing Manager for Networking Industry Ecosystem and names his session “Huawei-BenYang-ONAP Introduction and CCVPN Usecase.” The session concerned ONAP, an open-source network-orchestration platform, and CCVPN, a use case for coordinating VPN service across network layers and providers.

Huawei announced the related demonstration at Open Networking Summit Europe in Amsterdam on September 26, 2018. The announcement described CCVPN as a use case for the ONAP Casablanca release, which was then expected in November 2018. These dates describe the historical presentation and release context, not a claim about present-day deployments.

What are ONAP and CCVPN?

ONAP: the orchestration framework

ONAP describes itself as a vendor-agnostic, policy-driven framework for designing, implementing, analyzing, and managing network services through their lifecycles. It can coordinate physical and virtual network functions. In CCVPN, it provided the service-level coordination needed to link transport and SD-WAN resources rather than acting as a VPN device itself.

CCVPN: a service across domains and layers

CCVPN means Cross Domain and Cross Layer VPN. The ONAP blueprint combines SOTN—super high-speed optical transport networking—with ONAP to unify resource and service scheduling. In practical terms, the service spans both an optical transport network (OTN) underlay and an SD-WAN overlay, and can cross from one operator’s network into another’s.

How did the cross-operator workflow work?

  1. Each operator ran its own ONAP instance. Vodafone and China Mobile maintained separate instances responsible for their respective network domains.
  2. Each instance coordinated local network layers. It orchestrated an OTN underlay and an SD-WAN overlay within its operator’s domain.
  3. The instances exchanged service coordination across the boundary. The blueprint describes an east-west interface aligned with the MEF Interlude API, allowing ONAP instances to peer for cross-operator orchestration.
  4. The service was provisioned end to end. Local network resources were coordinated so the VPN could cross both technology layers and the boundary between Vodafone and China Mobile.

Huawei supplied integrations with commercial OTN and SD-WAN controllers for the demonstration. That is compatible with ONAP’s vendor-agnostic framework: the platform is designed to work with network functions and controllers through integrations, while a particular deployment still depends on the systems connected to it.

  • CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
  • EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
  • OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.

What ONAP components handled the work?

Component Role in the CCVPN flow
SO (Service Orchestrator) Coordinates end-to-end service orchestration.
SDN-C (SDN Controller) Establishes network connectivity.
VF-C (Virtual Function Controller) Handles network-service and VNF lifecycle functions.

These components divide responsibilities: SO coordinates the overall service, while SDN-C and VF-C support connectivity and network-service/VNF lifecycle operations. Cross-operator delivery also depends on the instances’ east-west coordination and the controller integrations in each domain.

How is CCVPN different from a single-operator VPN?

Dimension Single-domain VPN orchestration CCVPN approach
Scope Service within one operator’s domain. Service delivery across operator boundaries.
Network layers May focus on IP or SD-WAN; optical transport coordination is not established by the single-domain description. Coordinates an OTN/SOTN underlay and an SD-WAN overlay.
Cross-provider coordination Does not inherently require coordination between operators. Uses peering between operator ONAP instances, with an east-west interface aligned with the MEF Interlude API.
Lifecycle scope Depends on the specific orchestrator and deployment. The blueprint identifies provisioning as well as discovery, rerouting, branch or VNF changes, and optimization capabilities.
Automation model Depends on the implementation; manual bilateral provisioning is one possible approach. Uses policy-driven orchestration, with later Jakarta documentation describing intent-based and closed-loop enhancements.

The comparison is about architectural scope, not a universal feature checklist for every VPN product. A single-domain system may have extensive automation; CCVPN’s distinguishing purpose is orchestrating service across both layers and operator domains.

Which capabilities were part of the blueprint, and which came later?

The CCVPN blueprint lists physical-network discovery and modeling, cross-domain orchestration, cross-operator provisioning, close-loop rerouting, dynamic branch or VNF changes, and intelligent optimization as innovations. These are blueprint capabilities; the 2018 announcement establishes that a demonstration took place, but does not by itself prove that every listed capability was exercised or deployed commercially.

Later ONAP Jakarta documentation records additional work: intent-based service discovery for cloud-leased-line and transport-slicing services, 1+1 protection for cloud leased lines, and closed-loop or user-triggered intent updates. This is subsequent release documentation, not a feature claim about the original 2018 demonstration.

What the demonstration established—and what it did not

The demonstration showed an architecture for coordinating a VPN across two named operators, two network layers, and separate ONAP instances. China Mobile’s stated deployment motivation was enterprise customer-oriented optical/IP VPN service, with the broader goal of using ONAP for automation and intelligence within and across service-provider boundaries.

The published account identifies the participants, architecture, and use-case goals, but provides no material quantitative performance statistics. It does not establish measured provisioning time, service scale, availability, or production rollout. The best-supported takeaway is architectural: ONAP was used as the coordinating framework for a cross-layer, cross-operator service, with controller integrations connecting it to the underlying networks.
