Emad Mostaque resigned as Stability AI’s CEO and from its board on March 23, 2024. The company said he was leaving to pursue decentralized AI; Mostaque’s reported explanation was that the concentration of power in AI was harmful and that he wanted to address it at Stability and elsewhere. Those are his stated reasons, not an independently established account of every factor behind the departure.
What happened at Stability AI
Stability AI announced on March 23, 2024, that Mostaque had resigned both as chief executive and as a board member. The company appointed its COO, Shan Shan Wong, and CTO, Christian Laforte, as interim co-CEOs while the board searched for a permanent CEO. The announcement does not establish who holds the permanent role today.
Stability AI is known for Stable Diffusion, its image-generation model, and described its work in the announcement as open, multimodal generative AI. Its board chairman, Jim O’Shaughnessy, thanked Mostaque for his “leadership and relentless commitment to Stability AI and the open source movement.” Stability AI’s announcement contains the company’s account of the transition.
Why did Mostaque say he was stepping down?
The company said Mostaque was leaving “to pursue decentralized AI.” In contemporary reporting, Mostaque’s explanation was quoted as: “The concentration of power in AI is bad for us all. I decided to step down to fix this at Stability & elsewhere.” TechCrunch’s report attributes those words to him.

In the company announcement, Mostaque also said, “It is now time to ensure AI remains open and decentralised.” The announcement quoted him describing Stability AI’s progress as “hundreds of millions of downloads” and saying the company was in capable hands. The downloads figure is his broad claim in the announcement; it does not give a measurement method or independent audit.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What does “concentration of power in AI” mean?
Mostaque framed decentralized AI as an alternative to AI development being controlled by a small number of organizations or decision-makers. In that wider debate, “decentralized” generally points toward distributing development, access, or control more broadly, while “centralized” points toward concentrating those functions. His remarks show how he presented his goal; they do not establish a detailed plan for how he intended to achieve it.
His resignation alone does not demonstrate that power in the AI industry became more distributed. The company announcement and contemporary report document a leadership change and his public rationale, but do not provide a complete account of internal board or investor deliberations or independently verify that rationale as the sole cause.
