Yes—but only in the specific, historical sense reported in February 2017: Cellebrite said its in-house Advanced Investigative Service could unlock and extract evidence from iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus devices. The report named Uber, Facebook, Chrome, and unspecified dating apps as targets, but did not detail the records recovered from each. This was a forensic service, not a consumer unlocking app, and the available sources do not establish whether the capability is offered today.

What Cellebrite said it could do

On February 22, 2017, Cellebrite director of forensic research Shahar Tal wrote that “Cellebrite’s CAIS now supports lawful unlocking and evidence extraction of iPhone 4S/5/5C/5S/6/6+ devices (via our in-house service only).” MacRumors reported the claim two days later, specifically covering iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus.

The qualifier matters: CAIS referred to Cellebrite’s Advanced Investigative Service, which the report described as an in-house service. It was not a publicly available utility for iPhone owners to unlock their own phones. In this context, “unlock” meant access for a forensic examination and evidence extraction—not removing a carrier lock or bypassing an ordinary screen lock with a consumer tool.

Which app data did the report mention?

The MacRumors report named Uber, Facebook, Chrome, and “some dating apps” as sources of personal data. It did not identify the dating apps or specify which records were extracted from any app. The claim therefore does not establish that every item stored by those apps—or deleted content, passwords, or credentials—could be recovered.

Cellebrite’s January 2018 Advanced Unlocking & Extraction Services datasheet provides broader context. It says full-file-system extraction could recover downloaded email, third-party application data, geolocation data, and system logs. Those are general service categories in a historical datasheet; they do not identify particular app fields or verify the exact 2017 iPhone 6 capability.

What “full-file-system extraction” means here

A full-file-system extraction is broader than a logical acquisition that collects only data exposed through ordinary interfaces or selected records. Cellebrite’s 2018 datasheet describes the service as capable of obtaining the full file system and lists app data alongside email, location data, and logs. The report does not provide technical details about how the 2017 iPhone 6 extraction worked, what iOS versions were supported, or whether every device yielded the same results.

  • Unlocked for freedom to choose your carrier. Compatible with both GSM & CDMA networks. The phone is unlocked to work with all GSM Carriers & CDMA Carriers Including AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon, Straight Talk., Etc.

That distinction also limits what can be inferred: a broad extraction method is not proof that every app record was present, readable, or recoverable on every phone.

Was this a lawful or publicly available service?

Cellebrite’s 2018 datasheet calls the offering an “exclusive paid Advanced Unlocking Service” available to law-enforcement agencies globally “for lawfully authorized examinations,” with processing through secure Cellebrite Forensic Labs. That is the company’s description of its service and is not independent validation or legal advice. Whether an examination is lawful depends on the applicable authority and circumstances.

The 2017 report also gave historical prices of $1,500 per phone and $250,000 for an annual subscription. Those are figures reported by MacRumors in 2017, not current prices or evidence that the same service remains available.

What later and earlier sources do—and do not—confirm

The 2018 datasheet confirms that Cellebrite described paid, lab-based forensic services and broad full-file-system extraction categories after the 2017 report. It does not confirm that the same iPhone 6 capability continued, or that Cellebrite offers it today.

A separate National Institute of Justice record from September 2012 covers an earlier tool, UFED version 1.1.8.6, tested on nine mobile devices. The record reports complete and accurate acquisition of supported data objects for the tested devices except for listed anomalies involving personal information management data, MMS, call logs, subscriber or equipment information, non-ASCII address-book entries, and acquisition disruption. This was not an evaluation of the 2017 Advanced Investigative Service or its iPhone 6 claim.

What the report means for iPhone owners

  • It was a dated capability claim: the report was published in February 2017 and named iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus.
  • It was not a consumer service: the reported route was Cellebrite’s in-house forensic service.
  • The app list was limited: Uber, Facebook, Chrome, and unnamed dating apps were mentioned, without a breakdown of recoverable fields.
  • Current availability is unverified: these sources do not establish present-day Cellebrite capabilities, service availability, or pricing.
