Windows XP was the last client version of Windows to include Space Cadet Pinball. Microsoft removed it during the move to 64-bit Windows because the game’s collision detection failed: the ball could pass through table objects. The old code was difficult to understand and fix, so Microsoft dropped the game rather than delay the much larger 64-bit transition. It was a technical and scheduling decision, not the licensing explanation often repeated online.
What was Space Cadet Pinball?
The familiar Windows game was the Space Cadet table from the Full Tilt! Pinball lineage. Project-history documentation describes Microsoft working with Cinematronics and Maxis on the version released with Microsoft Plus! for Windows 95. The later commercial Full Tilt! Pinball included Space Cadet alongside two other tables, Skullduggery and Dragon’s Keep, as well as additional missions and features. The project history and preservation project document that lineage; this is historical project information, not a current Microsoft product statement.
Why did Microsoft remove it?
During the 32-bit-to-64-bit transition, the game developed a serious collision-detection failure. Microsoft engineer Raymond Chen described the symptom in a 2012 account: “The 64-bit version of Pinball had a pretty nasty bug where the ball would simply pass through other objects like a ghost.” The ball could even leave the table. Chen’s account of Pinball’s removal says the collision detector was buried in code written by an outside company, much of it uncommented and difficult for the Windows team to understand. With millions of other lines of code to port, the team chose to drop Pinball rather than spend the time needed to diagnose and repair it.
That makes the immediate explanation a broken game during a major port, compounded by hard-to-maintain legacy code and release pressure—not a decision to remove the game because of licensing.

Where did the collision bug appear?
Chen added an important qualification in a 2022 follow-up: the severe failure he personally saw happened on 64-bit Windows running on Alpha AXP development hardware. He said an Itanium build also had a collision problem, but it was less severe. His later clarification speculates that a C-runtime default-rounding behavior or a compiler fix may eventually have made the game work, but he presents that as a theory—not a confirmed explanation. He also said nobody told him Pinball had been added back in a later context. The Alpha AXP observation should therefore not be generalized into a claim that every 64-bit build failed in precisely the same way.
Was Pinball removed because Microsoft did not own it?
Licensing is relevant to what happened later, but it was not the stated reason for removal. Chen said the source code was licensed from another company, so Microsoft could not release it as its own open-source code. His explanation distinguishes that source-code restriction from the technical decision to stop shipping the game.

Can you still play the old Windows pinball game?
Community preservation projects exist, but they are not official Microsoft distributions. The SpaceCadetPinball project describes itself as a reverse engineering of the Windows game. Its README says its compiled executables must be used with original game resources, which the project does not include; it supports data files from Windows and Full Tilt! The project documents desktop Windows, Linux, and macOS support, as well as community ports such as web/Emscripten and several consoles.
- Game data: The project does not bundle the original resources. Its README says those files must be supplied separately.
- Provenance: The project is a community reverse-engineering effort, not a Microsoft release. The existence of a port does not establish permission to download or redistribute original game data.
- Experience: When choosing a port, check whether it preserves the original presentation or adds enhanced graphics, and confirm which platform and resource files it supports.
Because the code was licensed from another company and the project requires original resources, there is no official Microsoft source-code release or bundled resource download established by these sources. The available information also does not establish a current authorized retailer or catalog listing.
