McDonald’s Netherlands pulled its 45-second, AI-made Christmas ad three days after releasing it in December 2025. The episode was not proof that audiences reject AI advertising; it showed how a joke about holiday stress, uneasy visuals and unclear creative oversight can combine into a brand problem. For marketers, the practical lessons are to test the emotional premise, judge the finished ad as viewers will see it, and make final creative responsibility explicit.

What happened to McDonald’s AI Christmas ad?

McDonald’s Netherlands posted the 45-second commercial on YouTube on December 6, 2025, and removed it on December 9 after online criticism, according to BBC News. Developed by Dutch agency TBWANeboko with US production company The Sweetshop, the ad used generative-AI clips to portray holiday mishaps. Its “most terrible time of the year” framing suggested that viewers could escape the season’s chaos by retreating to McDonald’s. The Guardian and the Los Angeles Times also reported on the campaign and its reception.

McDonald’s said it had intended to show stressful moments during Dutch holidays. In its explanation, the company acknowledged that many guests see the period as “the most wonderful time of the year,” and called the episode an important learning as it explored effective uses of AI, as reported by BBC News and Adformatie. That identifies an emotional mismatch, but it is not a complete explanation of every objection.

Why did the ad draw criticism?

Coverage described several kinds of objection, rather than one single complaint. Some viewers criticized the characters’ uncanny appearance, the stitched-together feel of the AI clips and the editing. Others disliked the bleak premise or questioned whether McDonald’s was a convincing refuge from family festivities. These are reported reactions and commentary, not results from a representative survey; the available reporting does not establish how the Dutch public as a whole responded. The BBC and Los Angeles Times covered the criticism.

The premise had to work before the technology could

The ad’s central idea depended on viewers finding holiday stress relatable and the proposed escape funny. McDonald’s own explanation indicates that this angle collided with the warm holiday associations many of its guests hold. A campaign can be deliberately ironic, but irony still needs to make sense for its audience and for the brand’s role in the story.

The viewing experience is more than the AI images

Criticism of character credibility, continuity and editing points to a broader creative test: does the finished piece feel coherent, well-paced and intentional? A sequence of striking images cannot carry a campaign if the transitions, performances or tone make the story feel awkward. Nor can technical novelty fix an idea that leaves viewers unsure why the brand belongs in the scene.

What can marketers learn from the campaign?

Test the emotional premise with the intended audience

Before production, check whether the intended reaction—such as recognition, surprise or humor—is likely to strengthen the brand’s place in that occasion. Seasonal campaigns come with established expectations. Ask viewers what they think the ad is saying, whether the joke lands, and whether the brand’s proposed role feels believable. This would have tested the tension between holiday stress and the warmth many guests associated with the season.

Review the complete ad, not just individual AI clips

Evaluate the full cut in context, including character credibility, continuity between scenes, pacing, editing, tone and the product’s role. Reviewers should be able to describe what the ad wants viewers to feel and why McDonald’s belongs in that story. If those answers vary sharply, the issue may be the concept or execution, not a need for more visual polish.

Agree who can shape and approve the work

The Los Angeles Times reported that directing duo Mark Potoka and Matt Spicer said they resigned after being cut out of the production process and unable to see or influence the work. That account is attributed to the directors; the available sources do not independently resolve the production dispute. For any campaign, the process lesson is to make responsibilities explicit: who shapes the concept, reviews iterations, can request changes and approves the final cut?

Measure the whole workflow instead of assuming AI saves time or money

The Sweetshop’s chief executive, Melanie Bridge, told The Guardian, “It’s never about replacing craft, it’s about expanding the toolbox.” The campaign involved substantial human creative work, and the ad was ultimately withdrawn. The available reporting does not establish whether it cost less or took less time than a conventional production, so the case cannot support a quantified efficiency claim. Teams assessing an AI-assisted workflow should track the labor and revisions it actually requires, alongside the final result.

What this case does—and does not—show

The Netherlands campaign is a useful case study in audience fit, creative execution and accountability, but it is one campaign. The available sources provide no representative audience survey, comparable campaign-performance dataset, independent cost analysis or measured efficiency result for this ad, as noted in BBC News, The Guardian, the Los Angeles Times and Adformatie. Its removal and the reported criticism are reasons to examine the creative choices and production process—not evidence that every AI-made ad will fail or that audiences uniformly reject AI advertising.
