Electron announced its official community Discord on October 1, 2020, alongside an invitation to contribute to Hacktoberfest 2020. Discord remains listed as a current way to get help and feedback, but the old Hacktoberfest issue drive is historical: Hacktoberfest 2026 describes a different, event-focused format, and current Electron participation has not been confirmed.

What Electron announced in October 2020

On October 1, 2020, Electron introduced an official Discord server as a central place for community news, help, release updates, and informal conversation. The announcement paired the launch with Hacktoberfest 2020, inviting people to work on issues labeled hacktoberfest across the Electron repository, Electron’s website, Electron Fiddle, and Electron Forge. It also pointed contributors toward help wanted issues for more challenging work. Electron’s original announcement describes that year’s invitation; it should not be read as a current list of tasks or an assurance that the 2020 server invitation or channel setup remains unchanged.

How to get help with Electron now

Electron’s current Community page still lists Discord as a place to get help and feedback. It also points to other routes, including the subreddit and Stack Overflow, and directs people to appropriate channels for bug reports, feature requests, translations, security issues, and conduct concerns. Choose the route that fits the issue rather than treating Discord as the only official way to contact the project.

How to contribute to Electron

For code, documentation, dependency, or tooling changes in Electron’s main repository, follow the project’s contribution guide. It covers the workflow from setting up locally and making changes through committing, rebasing, testing, opening a pull request, discussing updates, and landing the change. Read the current guide before starting: it is maintained documentation and can change.

Two project rules to know before opening a pull request

  • Do not change dependency files independently. Electron says changes to package.json or yarn.lock should be made only by maintainers for security reasons.
  • Review and understand any AI-assisted work. Electron says unreviewed AI-generated contributions will be declined. The guide makes contributors responsible for understanding and being able to explain their contributions, including work produced with AI assistance.

How Hacktoberfest 2026 differs from the 2020 invitation

The two announcements describe different years and formats. Electron’s 2020 post promoted repository issues with a particular label; Hacktoberfest’s 2026 FAQ describes a program centered on community events. It lists 300+ in-person and online events worldwide focused on hands-on building, experimentation, and learning with open-source AI and open-weight models. That figure is the number of events described, not a participant count.

Participation format Contribute to issues carrying the hacktoberfest label in named Electron-related repositories; help wanted issues were mentioned for harder tasks. 300+ online and in-person community events focused on hands-on work and learning with open-source AI and open-weight models.
What to verify The announcement is historical, not proof that those labels or opportunities remain current. Check Hacktoberfest’s current event information and Electron’s current project pages for opportunities. The available official sources do not establish an Electron-specific 2026 program.

The 2026 FAQ says the event is run by Major League Hacking and DEV in partnership with DigitalOcean. Its format does not mean open-source contribution is limited to event participants or to October: Hacktoberfest says open-source work can be started year-round. Check the FAQ for current event details and eligibility before participating; it describes worldwide eligibility from age 13, subject to U.S. export controls and embargo restrictions.

Is Electron participating in Hacktoberfest 2026?

That is unconfirmed by the official sources cited here. Electron’s 2020 invitation does not establish that the project is hosting a 2026 event, maintaining Hacktoberfest-tagged issues, or otherwise participating. To find current ways to help Electron, use its Community page and contribution guide; to find Hacktoberfest activities, consult the event’s current FAQ and event listings.
