SONiC’s ecosystem is growing, with published deployments and evaluations spanning AI infrastructure, telecom, enterprise networking and payments. The Linux Foundation and SONiC Foundation cite examples from operators including SAKURA internet, Rakuten and Mitsui Knowledge Industry, alongside an anonymized global e-commerce company. These case studies show real-world use, but they do not independently establish SONiC as the market’s leading network operating system or guarantee similar savings for other organizations.

What is SONiC networking?

SONiC—Software for Open Networking in the Cloud—is an open-source, Linux-based network operating system. Microsoft originally created it for Azure data centers, and the project is hosted by the Linux Foundation. The Foundation’s 2022 description said SONiC ran on more than 100 switches from multiple vendors and ASICs and included features such as BGP and RDMA. That historical description is not a current compatibility list; support depends on the particular switch, ASIC, software release and required features.

SONiC’s multi-vendor approach gives network operators more choice in software and hardware than a single-vendor stack may offer. It does not make every switch interchangeable, make migration automatic, or ensure that different platforms behave identically in production.

What adoption did the Foundation announce?

At OCP Global Summit on October 13, 2025, the Linux Foundation announced that Nexthop AI had advanced to Premier membership and highlighted four deployment or evaluation examples. The Foundation described SONiC as a leading open-source network operating system; that is the Foundation’s positioning, not an independently verified market-share ranking.

AI infrastructure

  • SAKURA internet: The Foundation announcement described an 800-GPU SONiC-powered cloud infrastructure and reported that it earned 49th place in the global TOP500 ranking.
  • Mitsui Knowledge Industry: The announcement described SONiC in AI infrastructure behind the Tokyo-1 supercomputer and cited cost savings and lifecycle control.

Telecom and payments

  • Rakuten: The Foundation said Rakuten evaluated multi-vendor SONiC at scale for telecom and reported savings compared with proprietary solutions.
  • An unnamed national retail payments operator in India: The announcement described infrastructure supporting hundreds of millions of daily transactions and reported a 40% reduction in total cost of ownership (TCO).

These figures and descriptions are claims in Foundation announcements and case studies, not results from independent comparative trials. The payments operator is not named, and the available announcement does not provide enough detail to treat its reported TCO reduction as a general expectation.

Enterprise and cloud examples

The Foundation’s user-story index also lists organizations and examples including Broadcom, Dell IT, Orange, Alibaba Cloud and a global e-commerce operator. The presence of a case study indicates a published example, not necessarily that every organization uses SONiC in the same way or at the same scale.

What does the e-commerce case study say about cost?

A Linux Foundation-licensed 2025 case study describes an unnamed global e-commerce company that selected community SONiC after assessing proprietary network operating systems and commercial SONiC distributions. It deployed SONiC across switches from six vendors and moved from 100GbE to 400GbE. The company reported 30% lower TCO in that deployment.

The case study attributes the reported reduction to several combined changes: eliminating license fees, standardizing components, using commodity optics and cables, and reducing support and refresh costs. Because these measures were bundled in one anonymized operator’s deployment, the result is not a like-for-like benchmark or a forecast for another network.

How has the SONiC ecosystem grown?

Membership and contributor figures are dated snapshots, not current totals. The Linux Foundation reported 36 member organizations after seven additions in an August 25, 2025 announcement. On July 28, 2026, the Foundation announced Supranett as a Premier member and Exaware, TeraHop and Infrawaves as General members. That 2026 announcement did not give a refreshed aggregate membership count, so the earlier figure should not be read as today’s total.

In an April 29, 2024 announcement, the Linux Foundation reported 4,250 contributors across more than 520 organizations and 20% year-over-year contributor growth. Those are 2024 figures, not a current contributor count.

Which switches support SONiC?

There is no single universal answer: compatibility depends on the hardware platform and ASIC, SONiC release, enabled features and the operator’s requirements. The Foundation’s historical statement that SONiC ran on switches from multiple vendors does not identify which models are supported today. Check current project compatibility information and the hardware vendor’s support details for the specific platform and release under consideration.

Production readiness also takes more than a compatibility match. A published e-commerce case study describes assessing spine, leaf and edge roles, selecting SKUs by compatibility and performance benchmarking, working through lab interoperability, and qualifying the setup before production. That is a useful indication of the validation work a multi-vendor deployment can require.

Can SONiC reduce data center network costs?

Published examples show that operators have reported savings, but they do not establish a typical reduction. The October 2025 Foundation announcement reported savings for Rakuten and the unnamed Indian payments operator; the 2025 e-commerce case study reported a 30% TCO reduction for one unnamed company. The scope, baseline and cost drivers differ, so those numbers should not be compared as if they came from the same controlled trial.

To assess likely costs for a particular network, compare the full lifecycle rather than software licensing alone:

  • Hardware and ASIC compatibility, including the cost of qualifying the required platforms.
  • Required features, scale and performance, validated against the intended network roles.
  • Support and lifecycle arrangements, including refresh planning and operational expertise.
  • Automation, observability and interoperability work needed to manage the chosen mix of hardware and software.
  • Optics, cabling and other components, verified for the specific interfaces and deployment.

Who is adopting SONiC for AI infrastructure?

The Foundation’s October 2025 examples include SAKURA internet’s reported 800-GPU cloud infrastructure and Mitsui Knowledge Industry’s AI infrastructure behind the Tokyo-1 supercomputer. These are concrete published examples of SONiC use in AI-related environments, but the available descriptions do not establish that the deployments share the same architecture, performance profile or operating model.

On July 28, 2026, the Foundation also announced Supranett’s Premier membership. Membership is a sign of ecosystem participation; by itself, it does not document a production deployment. The announcement’s broader framing of SONiC’s role in AI networking is the Foundation’s view, not an independent market assessment.

What the adoption evidence establishes—and what it does not

The published examples document SONiC deployments and evaluations across AI, telecom, enterprise, cloud and payments, as well as participation by additional ecosystem organizations. They offer practical evidence that SONiC is being used beyond a single operator or workload. They do not provide a neutral global market-share measure, prove that SONiC is the market leader, or show that every deployment achieved the same cost, performance or operational results.
