Open source supports entertainment in two distinct ways: artists use applications such as Blender to create content, while shared technologies such as OpenUSD help production teams move and compose complex 3D scene data across tools. The Academy Software Foundation (ASWF) provides a collaborative home for projects that benefit from shared development. These tools and efforts can support production pipelines, but they do not mean every studio uses the same software or makes its full pipeline public.
How is open source used in movies?
Open source is part of entertainment production both as software people work in directly and as infrastructure that connects tools and teams. A 3D artist might create or edit work in an application; a pipeline may use shared formats and libraries to pass scene data between departments. Studios can also contribute selected tools or datasets back to the wider community.
These roles solve different problems. A creation application is not the same thing as a scene-interchange technology, and neither is the same thing as an organization that coordinates shared software development.
What open-source software and infrastructure matter in animation and VFX?
| Example | Primary role | Where it fits |
|---|---|---|
| Blender | Artist-facing 3D content-creation application | Artists use it to create and work with 3D content. Blender Studio also publishes production data from open movies for learning and examination. Blender’s official licensing information describes its GPL terms. |
| OpenUSD | 3D scene description, composition and interchange | Helps move and compose scene data among content-creation tools and supports large-scale film and visual-effects workflows. It is infrastructure, not a complete animation application. OpenUSD documentation describes its capabilities and use. |
| Academy Software Foundation (ASWF) | Shared project collaboration and maintenance | A neutral forum for developers and companies working on software for motion pictures and broader media, including image creation, VFX, animation and sound. It is an organization, not a tool an artist uses to make a shot. ASWF describes its role. |
The examples are complementary rather than interchangeable: Blender is a creative application, OpenUSD helps production data travel between tools, and ASWF supports collaboration around shared projects.

What is OpenUSD, and why does it matter for filmmaking?
Universal Scene Description (USD), commonly called OpenUSD, represents and composes 3D scenes and their assets. Its purpose is to help data move between digital content-creation applications and to support collaborative, large-scale workflows. That matters in film and visual effects, where a scene can involve many assets, departments and tools rather than one self-contained file.
Pixar announced the open-source release of USD in 2016, after developing it for its own production workflows. The release announcement described the need for scalable, coherent and flexible pipelines and for asset reuse. Pixar’s OpenUSD introduction and the project documentation explain the technology’s interchange and composition role.

OpenUSD is not a guarantee that any two applications will exchange every feature without adaptation. A production must check which scene types, schemas, applications and pipeline stages it needs, then validate the integrations. Pixar CTO Steve May describes OpenUSD as the foundation for Pixar’s animation tools and says it is “rapidly becoming the standard”; that is Pixar’s characterization, not evidence that every studio has adopted it. Pixar’s OpenUSD page attributes the statement to May.
Can Blender be used commercially?
Yes. Blender is free and open source, coordinated by the Blender Foundation, and its GPL license permits use for any purpose, including commercial use. That permission applies to Blender itself; it should not be generalized to other software, assets, plugins or materials used alongside it. Check the applicable license and notices for each project and component. See Blender’s license page.

Blender Studio’s open-movie archive makes production data, example files and workflow material available for study. It can help learners see how work is organized in real projects, in addition to using the application itself.

Through shared industry collaboration
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and the Linux Foundation launched ASWF as a neutral collaboration forum for software used in motion pictures and broader media. Shared maintenance can help organizations work together on technology that benefits from common development. The Academy’s 2018 launch announcement also identified ecosystem-management challenges such as siloed development, handling multiple library versions, and differences in governance and licensing models. These are coordination issues, not proof that open-source software is unsuitable for production. The Academy’s announcement explains the foundation’s launch and purpose.

The same 2018 announcement reported a historical investigation survey finding that more than 80% of the industry used open-source software, particularly in animation and visual effects. This was a finding reported by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in 2018, not a current industry adoption estimate.
By releasing selected technology or resources
Companies may share particular tools or datasets without publishing all of their production code. Pixar released USD as open source in 2016. Disney Animation lists selected open-source projects and research datasets and invites collaboration on its resources page. These examples show ways institutions contribute; they do not establish that every studio makes its internal pipeline public.

What should a production evaluate before adopting an open-source component?
- Purpose: Decide whether the need is an artist-facing application, scene interchange, or shared maintenance and development. The examples in this article address different layers.
- Workflow fit: For OpenUSD, identify the scene data, schemas, applications and pipeline stages the production must connect, and test those integrations rather than assuming universal compatibility.
- License and notices: Review the exact license for each project and any included libraries, plugins or assets. Blender’s commercial-use permission is specific to Blender’s GPL terms.
- Governance and maintenance: Understand who develops and maintains a project and how changes, versions and contributions are handled. Shared infrastructure can reduce duplicated effort, but coordinating across organizations brings its own work.
- Support needs: Distinguish a foundation or community project from a commercial vendor’s support offering. A project’s open-source status alone does not specify a support contract.
