It converts a 3.7–4.2V battery into regulated 5.2V output at up to 4A total, and charges the battery from a 5–14V input at up to 3A. That makes it a candidate for battery-powered 5V projects such as a Raspberry Pi 4, but the 4A ceiling is not a guarantee that every battery-and-wiring setup can sustain that load.
What the AmpRipper 4000 does
The AmpRipper 4000 v1.0 combines two functions: it charges a 1S lithium battery and boosts that battery’s lower voltage to a regulated output for a project. It is not a multi-cell battery-management system. The board is listed by Kickstart Design for use with Arduino, Raspberry Pi 4, Teensy, and other 5V devices.
Kickstart Design specifies 5.2V output at up to 4A, or 20W, and charging at up to 3A. The 4A figure is the board’s maximum stated output, not a claim that a connected battery, cable, or project can necessarily supply or use that current continuously.

Can it power a Raspberry Pi 4 from a battery?
Kickstart Design lists Raspberry Pi 4 among the board’s intended applications. The AmpRipper 4000’s 5.2V output and 4A maximum make it suitable to consider for a battery-powered Pi 4 build, provided the battery can deliver the required current and the power path has appropriately rated wiring and connections. The board’s rating alone does not establish the runtime or whether a particular battery-and-Pi setup will remain within its limits under load.
For sustained high-current use, account for battery discharge capability, voltage drop through wiring, and heat. The listed optional heatsink/fan kit is a thermal provision, not a substitute for checking the complete build’s requirements.

- Battery charging protection board has high performance, easy to understand, convenient to install and operate, good adaptability to input power with limited driving capacity, wide application, customers can choose what they need according to their different needs.
- 1.Connect input power 2.Adjust output voltage 3.Connect load
- For the 2A version, please provide a power supply greater than 2A and good soldering, for the 4A version, unless your Type-C power supply can provide 4A current, it is not recommended that you use the 4A version
Choose and connect a compatible battery
Use a 3.7–4.2V single-cell Li-ion or LiPo battery (1S). The battery connector is JST PH-2.0; check the board’s polarity and the battery’s wiring before plugging it in. JST connector housings do not, by themselves, guarantee matching wire polarity across batteries, so do not rely on connector shape alone.
The 1S requirement matters: a multi-cell pack is not interchangeable with a single-cell battery just because its connector fits. The official product details specify the battery voltage and topology but do not name a preferred capacity or promise runtime for a particular load.

- Input voltage range: 5~6V; over-current, over-voltage, and under-voltage protection
- Output voltage: 4.2V
- An ultra-small, 1A charging board for 3.7V lithium batteries with USB Type-C power input and LED charge indicators
- Support Type-C interface power supply, compatible with most PD fast charging heads
- The input terminal has a Type-c USB female socket, which can be directly used as an input to charge the lithium battery with a mobile phone charger.
Charging, power path, and monitoring
Input and charging
Supply the board through its supported 5–14V input. Charging current is adjustable up to 3A; the actual setting and achievable charge rate depend on the connected setup. Do not treat 3A as a guaranteed rate for every input source or battery.
Power path behavior
Kickstart Design says the board’s power-path management is intended to keep project power from being interrupted if the battery or charger is removed. This is the manufacturer’s stated behavior; it does not mean the project is protected from every wiring fault, overload, or inadequate input supply.

- Battery over-voltage protection, automatic charging.Protection voltage below input and battery short circuit.
- LED indicator: "CR" LED is the charging status indicator; "OK" LED fully charged or constant voltage mode
- Charging voltage: 8.4V; Charging current: 0.55A (1A version); 1.1A (2A version); 2.2A (4A version)
- 2-Cell(2S) 8.4V version: Input voltage: DC 3-6V (recommended DC 3.7V 5V); Input current: 1A (1A version); 2A (2A version); 4A (4A version)
Battery monitoring over I2C
The board exposes battery monitoring through an I2C interface compatible with the MAX17048 fuel-gauge family. This provides a way for a microcontroller project to read battery-related information; it is not the same as a display or a universal percentage-reading application. The product information does not specify a particular library, code example, or exact percentage accuracy.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When the AmpRipper 4000 is a good fit
- Choose it when a project needs a 1S lithium battery charger and a boosted 5.2V supply on one board.
- Consider it for Raspberry Pi 4, Arduino, Teensy, robotics, portable electronics, or USB battery-bank projects, as listed by Kickstart Design.
- Check the battery’s discharge rating, project peak current, wiring, and thermal conditions if the design approaches the 4A output limit.
- Look elsewhere if the design requires a multi-cell battery-management system, a different output voltage, or independently verified efficiency and runtime figures.
Kickstart Design lists the board from $29.99 on its product page; confirm current price and availability on the seller’s page before purchase.
