OpenTimelineIO (OTIO) became the Academy Software Foundation’s (ASWF) fifth hosted project on July 29, 2019. The move placed an open-source API and interchange format for editorial timeline data within a foundation intended to coordinate and support open-source software for media creation. It did not make OTIO a video editor, and the 2019 announcement’s description of its incubation stage should not be read as confirmation of its current maturity status.
What happened when OTIO joined ASWF?
On July 29, 2019, ASWF announced that its Technical Advisory Council had accepted OpenTimelineIO as the Foundation’s fifth hosted project. Pixar originally created OTIO. The announcement said the Foundation would maintain and further develop the project under technical steering committee oversight. The 2019 announcement described newly accepted projects as beginning in incubation while working toward the Foundation’s adoption standards. That is the stage language reported at the time, not verified evidence of OTIO’s current formal maturity stage.
The announcement also reported that OTIO had eleven releases since 2016 and had been used in production for Coco, Incredibles 2, and Toy Story 4, with contributions from Pixar, Lucasfilm, and Netflix. These are historical claims from 2019, not current release or usage counts.
What is OpenTimelineIO used for?
OTIO is an open-source API and interchange format for editorial timeline information. It represents relationships and editorial structure—such as clips, timing, tracks, transitions, markers, and metadata—so software and teams can exchange timeline data across production workflows. It is not itself a video-editing application and is not intended to carry the picture or rendered media.

The 2019 announcement described practical uses including tracking shot-length changes, adding context shots to dailies, communicating shots added or removed from a cut, conforming new renders into an edit, and handling picture-in-picture shots. In each case, the value is in making timeline structure available to other tools and departments, rather than requiring each handoff to be reconstructed from scratch.
Pixar’s then-Vice President of Research and Development, Guido Quaroni, explained the motivation in the announcement: “Picture-less data produced by editorial departments is very useful across the pipeline. We developed OpenTimelineIO to provide an open source alternative to proprietary formats and enable our community to easily and efficiently interchange editorial timelines.”
What does ASWF hosting mean?
ASWF provides an industry foundation for open-source content-creation software. Its stated mission includes increasing contributions to such software, coordinating work across projects, providing common build and test infrastructure, and offering a clear path for participation. The Foundation welcomes both technical and non-technical contributors. See the ASWF mission statement.
Hosting connects a project to shared governance and collaboration structures; it does not mean the Foundation owns every contribution or that every studio adopts the software. The 2019 announcement said OTIO would be maintained and developed under technical steering oversight. The current OTIO governance document identifies three roles:

What current evidence says about OTIO’s status
Two 2026 ASWF records show that OTIO remained represented and visible in Foundation programming. The May 27, 2026 Technical Advisory Council meeting record lists Eric Reinecke as an OpenTimelineIO representative. ASWF’s February 2026 Open Source Forum announcement listed “How OpenTimelineIO Enables AI-Native Creative Workflows,” by Buzz Hays of Google.
These records establish representation and program visibility on those dates. They do not establish a formal maturity-stage change, graduation from incubation, or a particular technical implementation result. The sources cited here do not verify OTIO’s current formal ASWF maturity stage.
Why the distinction matters
Joining ASWF is a governance and collaboration milestone, while OTIO’s function is technical: exchanging editorial timeline structure among tools and teams. The first can make coordinated maintenance and participation more organized; the second can help production workflows communicate edits and timing. Neither alone proves universal adoption, compatibility with every editor, or a current maturity designation.
