ByteDance, DataStax, DTEX, and Seacom joined the OpenSearch Software Foundation as General Members on April 30, 2025, the Linux Foundation announced at OpenSearchCon EU in Amsterdam. The companies bring experience in consumer technology, AI and open-source data technologies, insider-risk management, and open-source consulting and training, respectively. Membership signals participation in the Foundation; it does not by itself establish a specific level of technical contribution or control over the OpenSearch project.
Who joined the OpenSearch Software Foundation?
The Linux Foundation announced the four additions on April 30, 2025. Its announcement described the organizations this way:
| General Member | How the Foundation described the organization |
|---|---|
| ByteDance | A consumer technology company founded in 2012. The release says its mission is to inspire creativity and enrich life. |
| DataStax | An AI platform company helping enterprises and developers build AI applications using open-source technologies, including Langflow and Apache Cassandra. |
| DTEX | An insider-risk management company whose approach uses behavioral science and AI. |
| Seacom Srl | An IT services company offering open-source consulting and training to enterprises, institutions, and public administrations. |
These are descriptions from the Foundation’s April 30, 2025 announcement, not independent product evaluations. They show the range of organizations the Foundation said were joining, rather than establishing that each company sells an OpenSearch product.
What does General Member mean?
The announcement says General Members engage with working groups, contribute to technical initiatives, and help guide the Foundation’s strategic direction. It does not specify a guaranteed contribution volume or grant an individual member veto or control over the project.

#1 Best Overall
The Foundation’s role is to provide infrastructure and other resources intended to support OpenSearch’s long-term sustainability. It is administered by a Governing Board, which oversees the Foundation and its budget. The Foundation states that it is not responsible for technical oversight of the OpenSearch open-source project. That distinction matters: Foundation membership is an organizational role, not evidence that these four members determine the project’s technical direction. See the OpenSearch Foundation page for its description of the organization and membership structure.
What did the companies say about joining?
The release paired the membership news with statements from company representatives. ByteDance’s Willem Jiang said search and analytics operate at immense scale at the company and that open-source software supports innovation and speed. DataStax Chief Product Officer Ed Anuff described open-source data technologies as foundational to modern real-time applications, especially those powered by AI. DTEX CEO Marshall Heilman said the company was joining to expand its ongoing support. Seacom CEO Stefano Pampaloni said joining was a step in its commitment to open-source solutions and support.

These statements explain how the companies framed their participation; they do not set out specific technical projects or quantify future contributions.

The April 2025 announcement is a dated membership update, not a current complete roster. A later OpenSearch announcement on September 22, 2026 names Adelean, Intel, and Sidecar as new General Members, and identifies Seacom and Sidecar as certified Long Term Support providers. It does not say that ByteDance, DataStax, or DTEX left, nor does it establish the current status of all four 2025 additions.

For broader context, OpenSearch’s 2025 first-year retrospective lists ByteDance, DataStax, DTEX, and Seacom among Foundation additions. Its figures about contributions and downloads describe the project at that retrospective’s publication, not the individual output of these four organizations.
