From Foundation, the scheme branches into Practice Manager, Managing Professional, and Strategic Leader; completing all three earns ITIL Master. Your starting credential matters: ITIL 4 holders can progress to higher-level Version 5 modules without retaking Foundation, while ITIL v3 Foundation alone does not qualify as a prerequisite.
ITIL certification costs
The following amounts are from PeopleCert’s US-facing listing, checked September 28, 2026. They include VAT as displayed there; they are not guaranteed prices for other regions or future checkouts. Local currency, tax treatment, and promotions may change what you pay, so confirm the regional purchase page before ordering.
| Version 5 Foundation option | US price listed September 28, 2026 | Listed inclusions |
|---|---|---|
| Exam bundle | US$690 including VAT | Official eBook, exam voucher, learning resource kit |
| eLearning | US$1,029 including VAT | eBook, exam voucher, learning kit, interactive eLearning, auto-marked sample papers |

Compare the whole package—training format, exam voucher, attempts, schedule, and region—not just the headline course price. See PeopleCert’s Foundation listing.
Optional Foundation Bridge for ITIL 4 holders
PeopleCert’s US-facing Foundation Bridge (Version 5) listing showed an exam bundle at US$263 including VAT, eLearning at US$476, and eLearning+ at US$620 on September 28, 2026. These are also regional listing prices, not universal guarantees. The Bridge is an optional way for qualifying ITIL 4 holders to earn the Foundation (Version 5) credential; it is not required simply to progress to a higher-level Version 5 certification.

ITIL Version 5 levels and designations
Foundation is the entry credential. It provides the base for three designation routes. Transformation is required across the higher-level designations, but it counts across them rather than needing to be completed separately for each one. AI Governance is an extension module, not a requirement for the three designations.
| Designation | Version 5 requirements | Emphasis |
|---|---|---|
| Practice Manager | Foundation, one bundled practice module, and Transformation | Practice operations and improvement |
| Managing Professional | Foundation, Product, Service, Experience, and Transformation | Product, service, and experience management |
| Strategic Leader | Foundation, Strategy, and Transformation | Strategy |
| ITIL Master | Practice Manager, Managing Professional, and Strategic Leader | All three designations |
Practice Manager module bundles
- Monitor, Support and Fulfil
- Plan, Implement and Control
- Collaborate, Assure and Improve
Choose one of these bundles for the Practice Manager route. The official ITIL qualification scheme sets out the route structure.
Which ITIL certification path should you take?
If you are new to ITIL
- Earn ITIL Foundation (Version 5).
- Choose Practice Manager for a practice-focused route, Managing Professional for product, service, and experience work, or Strategic Leader for strategy.
- Complete the required modules, including Transformation, for your chosen designation.
If you already hold an ITIL 4 certification
PeopleCert accepts any ITIL 4 certification as a prerequisite for higher-level Version 5 modules, so retaking Foundation is not required for progression. If you want the separate Foundation (Version 5) credential, the optional Bridge is available to qualifying ITIL 4 holders.
If you hold only ITIL v3 Foundation
PeopleCert says ITIL v3 Foundation is not accepted as a prerequisite for Version 5 higher-level certifications. Its recommended route is to take Foundation (Version 5) training and exam. PeopleCert’s FAQ states: “The ITIL v3 Foundation certification is not accepted as a prerequisite for ITIL (Version 5) higher-level certifications.”

If you hold an advanced ITIL 4 or v3 credential
Check whether you qualify for the Managing Professional Transition (Version 5) if you hold ITIL 4 Managing Professional, ITIL 4 Master, ITIL v3 Expert, or ITIL v3 Master. PeopleCert describes the route as two exams and recommends as little as five training days, compared with 8–12 days through the regular route. These are training-duration recommendations, not guaranteed completion times.
If you hold ITIL 4 Strategic Leader or Practice Manager
PeopleCert describes Transformation as the upgrade module for those designations. If you also hold ITIL 4 Managing Professional, the Managing Professional Transition route may be an alternative and includes Transformation content. Confirm your exact eligibility and current module requirements in the official FAQ.

Training, exam booking, and choosing a provider
Foundation can be prepared for through PeopleCert’s exam bundle and study materials. For higher-level modules such as Product, Service, and Transformation, PeopleCert product pages require an accepted prerequisite plus training through an Accredited Training Organization or PeopleCert official eLearning. Results are not released until proof of training is provided.
- Check your current certificate against the prerequisite for the target module or transition route.
- Choose an accredited training provider or the relevant PeopleCert official eLearning option for higher-level modules.
- Compare total cost, including training, exam voucher, learning materials, number of attempts, and any retake coverage.
- Confirm the schedule, delivery format, exam language, region, and current terms before paying.
Use PeopleCert’s Accredited Training Organization directory to locate providers. For example, the Service (Version 5) product page describes module-specific prerequisites and training conditions.
Renewal and keeping certification current
PeopleCert product information indicates renewal every three years and 60 CPD points where that renewal route applies. Its FAQ describes one method: log 20 CPD points each year for three consecutive years through PeopleCert Plus. Renewal rules can differ by certificate and may change; check the current requirements for your specific credential before relying on a particular route.
ITIL 4 module sunset: what is currently planned
PeopleCert’s FAQ states that ITIL 4 modules are planned to sunset on December 31, 2027. Treat this as PeopleCert’s current plan, not a universal deadline for every individual credential or candidate. The FAQ reviewed did not yet state voucher validity dates, so check the official FAQ and your voucher terms for updates.
