Anthropic announced Claude Gov on June 6, 2025: a specialized set of Claude models built for U.S. national-security customers. At launch, Anthropic said access was limited to operators in classified environments and that agencies were already using the models at the highest levels of U.S. national security. Claude Gov is not a public chatbot download; agencies use models through approved government hosting and procurement routes.

What Claude Gov is—and what it is designed to do

Anthropic described Claude Gov as a custom model set developed exclusively for U.S. national-security customers, with input from government customers. The company says agencies may use it for strategic planning, operational support, intelligence analysis, and threat assessment. Its stated differences from standard Claude center on adapting model behavior and capabilities to those kinds of work:

  • Classified material: Anthropic says the models handle classified information with fewer refusals. That describes a difference in model behavior; it does not mean that any user can submit classified information through an ordinary Claude account.
  • Intelligence and defense documents: Anthropic says the models have greater understanding of documents and information used in those contexts.
  • Mission-critical languages: The models are described as more proficient in languages and dialects relevant to national-security operations.
  • Cybersecurity data: Anthropic highlights improved interpretation of complex cybersecurity data for intelligence analysis.

These are Anthropic’s descriptions of the models’ intended capabilities, not a published independent benchmark or a guarantee of performance in every mission. The company says Claude Gov went through the same rigorous safety testing as its other Claude models.

How Claude Gov differs from ordinary Claude

The central distinction is the intended customer and deployment context, not simply a different chatbot interface. Claude Gov is a specialized model set for national-security work; ordinary Claude products are not automatically authorized for classified workloads. A model’s ability to process certain material does not by itself authorize a particular system, user, or workflow to handle it.

Question Claude Gov What the distinction means
Who is it for? U.S. national-security customers Anthropic says access at launch was limited to operators in classified environments.
What is specialized? Handling classified material, defense and intelligence documents, critical languages, and cybersecurity data These are capabilities Anthropic says it adapted in response to government-customer feedback.
Where does it run? Through approved government environments and service routes It is not a retail chatbot download. Authorization depends on the hosting service and deployment, not just the model name.

Anthropic also offers government-focused services and access to Claude through approved platforms. Those offerings should not be treated as interchangeable with the specific Claude Gov model set announced in June 2025: check the product and hosting documentation for the exact model and workload an agency is considering.

How agencies can access Claude for government work

Access is through authorized environments and procurement channels, rather than an ordinary consumer signup. Anthropic’s June 11, 2025 announcement named Amazon Bedrock in AWS GovCloud for FedRAMP High and DoD Impact Level 4/5 workloads, listing Claude 3.5 Sonnet v1 and Claude 3 Haiku. Those are the models named in that announcement; it does not establish that every Claude model is available at those impact levels.

Anthropic’s public-sector FAQ, dated March 25, 2026, says Claude for Government is FedRAMP High authorized and that Claude API access is available through AWS GovCloud/IL5+ and Google Vertex with Assured Workloads at FedRAMP High. The exact availability and authorization depend on the service, configuration, workload, and applicable agency requirements.

FedRAMP and DoD Impact Level labels apply to cloud services and deployment environments. Anthropic’s FAQ explains that AI models themselves are software components, not cloud services. An authorization for a hosting route should therefore not be read as blanket approval of every model, integration, or use case.

What the federal contracts and procurement announcements mean

DoD prototype agreement

On July 14, 2025, Anthropic announced a two-year prototype other transaction agreement awarded by the Department of Defense’s Chief Digital and Artificial Intelligence Office, with a $200 million ceiling. The work covers frontier-AI prototypes, fine-tuning on DoD data, analysis of adversarial uses, and exchanging performance and operational feedback. A ceiling is the maximum value stated for the agreement, not a statement that the full amount has been spent or guaranteed.

Anthropic also connected the announcement to its work at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, which it described in the context of a deployment serving 10,000 scientists and researchers. That figure is the population referenced in the announcement, not a claim that all 10,000 use Claude Gov or that the lab deployment is a classified national-security environment.

Federal purchasing routes and time-limited offer

In 2025, the U.S. General Services Administration added Anthropic’s Claude to its Multiple Award Schedule, creating a federal procurement route. A schedule listing can make purchasing available through a federal contracting channel; it is not itself an authorization for classified use.

Anthropic later announced an offer of Claude for Government and Claude for Enterprise to all three branches of the U.S. government for $1 for one year. The offer was time-bounded, and the announcement does not establish that it remains available now. Agencies should confirm current terms directly with Anthropic before relying on that price.

What an agency should verify before using it

Before putting Claude into a government workflow, an agency needs to confirm more than whether a model is described as government-ready. The relevant checks include:

  • The exact Claude model and service being procured, including whether it is Claude Gov or another government-accessible Claude offering.
  • The hosting environment and its current authorization for the agency’s data classification and workload.
  • Whether the intended integration, users, and data flows are covered by the applicable agency approvals and controls.
  • The procurement path and current commercial terms, especially for any announced time-limited offer.
  • Human review and operational safeguards appropriate to the use, particularly for intelligence analysis, cybersecurity, or other consequential decisions.
