If GoProxy returns “This is a proxy server. Does not respond to non-proxy requests,” it has classified the incoming request as an ordinary, non-proxy request. The first thing to check is whether your client is actually using the GoProxy address and port as a proxy and sending a proxy-form request. The message alone does not show that the container failed to start.
What the GoProxy message means
GoProxy’s default NonproxyHandler handles requests it does not recognize as proxy requests. Its source describes the distinction as a relative path, such as GET /ping, rather than an absolute URL. The default handler responds with the message “This is a proxy server. Does not respond to non-proxy requests.” and HTTP 500. GoProxy source code

In other words, the response is about the form of the request GoProxy received. It does not, by itself, prove that the container is stopped or that its port is unassigned.
What to check
- Use the GoProxy endpoint as a proxy. Configure the client to use the container’s reachable address and port as its proxy endpoint. Requesting that address as though it were the website or service you want to visit is a different kind of request.
- Check the request target. GoProxy’s source contrasts an absolute URL in a proxy request with a relative path such as
/ping. If the request reaching GoProxy contains only a relative path, investigate how the client is making the request. - Inspect any intermediary. If traffic passes through Nginx or another reverse proxy, check how that layer constructs and forwards the upstream request. A historical GoProxy issue involving Nginx proxy_pass reports the same message, but it does not establish one universal configuration fix.
- Consult the project’s documentation. The GoProxy GitHub repository is the project resource cited in the forum discussion.
What is known about the LFS258 forum report
In the March 2022 LFS258 Class Forum thread “A.3 review2,” a learner said the containers were running and ports had been assigned, then reported this message while cURLing the GoProxy container. The post does not include the cURL command, image or GoProxy version, request headers, or lab instructions, so it is not possible to identify the exact cause or prescribe a specific flag or container change. A forum respondent said accessing the GoProxy container did not seem to be required by the exercise and pointed to the GoProxy project. That is the respondent’s guidance in the thread, not an independently verified statement of official course requirements.
