Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →In HotHardware’s January 31, 2024 synthetic and VR tests, the GeForce RTX 4080 SUPER generally improves only modestly on the original RTX 4080, while the RTX 4090 remains clearly ahead in the ray-tracing-focused DXR test. Results vary by workload: the Radeon RX 7900 XTX leads in some raster-oriented and VR comparisons, while the 4080 SUPER does better in the review’s ray-tracing comparisons. These benchmarks do not establish a winner across games or current prices.
What these benchmarks can—and cannot—tell you
This is a look at page 3 of Marco Chiappetta’s HotHardware review, published January 31, 2024. It covers synthetic 3DMark tests and VR-oriented benchmarks, not the review’s full gaming suite or its overall verdict. HotHardware’s results are specific to the tests on that page; the article does not provide a normalized performance average for the RTX 4080 SUPER.
Read each result by workload rather than treating the charts as a single ranking. Time Spy Extreme is raster-focused, while Speed Way and the DXR Feature Test exercise ray tracing. The VR benchmarks have their own scoring behavior, including a capped aggregate result in Superposition.
How the RTX 4080 SUPER compares in each test
3DMark Speed Way: a narrow lead over the RTX 4080
HotHardware reports that the RTX 4080 SUPER narrowly beats the original RTX 4080 in Speed Way and significantly outpaces the tested RX 7900 XTX in this result. Speed Way uses DirectX 12 Ultimate features, including ray-traced global illumination and reflections, so this is a ray-tracing-oriented synthetic result—not a prediction of performance in every game.
#1 Best Overall
- Powered by NVIDIA DLSS3, ultra-efficient Ada Lovelace arch, and full ray tracing
- 4th Generation Tensor Cores: Up to 4x performance with DLSS 3 vs. brute-force rendering
- 3rd Generation RT Cores: Up to 2x ray tracing performance
- OC mode: 2640 MHz (OC mode)/ 2610 MHz (Default mode)
- Axial-tech fans scaled up for 23% more airflow
3DMark Time Spy Extreme: the RX 7900 XTX is just ahead
In the raster-focused Time Spy Extreme test, HotHardware places the RTX 4080 SUPER just behind the RX 7900 XTX, describing their rasterization performance as roughly similar. The review’s broader comparison says the GeForce performs better in ray tracing, illustrating why the result depends on the workload.
3DMark DXR Feature Test: the RTX 4090 pulls away
The 4080 SUPER improves on the original RTX 4080 by a relatively small amount in HotHardware’s DXR Feature Test. The RTX 4090 is in a class of its own in this test, while the Radeon cards rank lower. This is the clearest result on the page showing a substantial gap between the 4080 SUPER and 4090, but it remains one test rather than a universal measure of gaming performance.

Unigine Superposition VR Future: the capped total can mislead
HotHardware notes that Superposition’s overall score is capped at 10,000. That ceiling can make the RTX 4080 SUPER appear tied with the RTX 4090 and RX 7900 XTX. The individual results distinguish them: the RTX 4090 is clearly ahead, and the RX 7900 XTX also scores ahead of the 4080 SUPER. Do not infer a true tie from the capped aggregate.
UL VRMark Blue Room: close to the RX 7900 XTX
In this non-ray-tracing VR test, HotHardware says the RTX 4080 SUPER nearly catches the RX 7900 XTX and beats the original RTX 4080 by a couple of percentage points. That small gain is specific to this benchmark and should not be generalized to all VR applications.

- Chipset: GeForce RTX 4080 Super
- Boost Clock / Memory: 2625 MHz / 23 Gbps
- Video Memory: 16GB GDDR6X
- Memory Interface: 256-bit

What the results mean if you are comparing GPUs
- Against the original RTX 4080: the 4080 SUPER’s gains are described as small in the DXR test and Blue Room, while Speed Way shows a narrow lead.
- Against the RTX 4090: the 4090 is markedly stronger in the DXR test. Superposition’s capped total hides differences that appear in its individual scores.
- Against the RX 7900 XTX: the Radeon is just ahead in raster-focused Time Spy Extreme and ahead in Superposition’s individual results; the GeForce leads in the described ray-tracing comparisons.
For a purchase decision, combine these workload-specific results with gaming tests for the titles and resolution you care about, plus the exact card’s current price, availability, dimensions, and power requirements. The January 2024 review and NVIDIA’s specification page do not establish current retail pricing or stock.
RTX 4080 SUPER power, cable, and fit guidance
NVIDIA’s official reference specifications, accessed September 28, 2026, list 10,240 CUDA cores, a 2.55 GHz boost clock, 16 GB of GDDR6X memory, and 320 W total graphics power. NVIDIA lists a 750 W minimum system power recommendation for its reference configuration. Add-in-board specifications can differ, so check the exact manufacturer’s model rather than assuming every 4080 SUPER card has the same requirements.

For its reference guidance, NVIDIA specifies either three PCIe 8-pin cables connected through the included adapter or one PCIe Gen 5 cable rated at 450 W or greater. NVIDIA also says to allow 36 mm of additional space for the power cable. Its reference Founders Edition dimensions are 304 mm long, 137 mm wide, and three slots; verify the selected card’s dimensions and case clearance before installation.
The official product page lists DLSS 3.5 features—Super Resolution, DLAA, Ray Reconstruction, and Frame Generation—and support for 4K at 240 Hz or 8K at 60 Hz with DSC. Feature availability depends on the game, and display-output capability does not guarantee a particular game frame rate.
Price context: “under $1K” is historical
“For Under $1K” is part of HotHardware’s 2024 review framing, not evidence of a current offer. NVIDIA’s product-family page displayed placeholders for starting price and release month when accessed September 28, 2026. Neither source establishes today’s street price, stock, or value relative to competing cards.
