OpenDaylight Neon was the project’s tenth release, announced by LF Networking on March 26, 2019, alongside OpenDaylight’s sixth anniversary. It strengthened cloud and edge network virtualization, added optical-transport control infrastructure, and improved the BGP-based WAN stack. The announcement is a historical snapshot: it does not establish the project’s current release status or usage.
What is OpenDaylight Neon?
OpenDaylight (ODL) is an open-source framework for software-defined networking (SDN), designed to help network operators and vendors build programmable networks and integrate network-control functions. The Linux Foundation announced the project in 2013 as its first networking project. Neon, released on March 26, 2019, was its tenth release and marked its sixth anniversary, according to LF Networking’s announcement.

LF Networking presented the release as a milestone in community scale: 10 releases, more than 1,000 authors and submitters, more than 100,000 commits, and networks serving more than 1 billion global subscribers. Those figures are claims in the 2019 announcement, not independently audited current measurements.
What changed in the Neon release?
Cloud and edge network virtualization
Neon hardened OpenDaylight’s cloud and edge network-virtualization features for production use. In practical terms, this work targeted deployments that need programmable connectivity and network functions across cloud or edge environments, rather than only traditional centralized network infrastructure.

Optical transport control
The release added infrastructure-control capabilities for optical transport networks. The announcement highlights an open northbound API, which lets higher-level controllers communicate with the optical-control layer. It does not specify a complete list of supported protocols or implementation details.
More robust WAN connectivity
Neon built on the BGP stack introduced in the preceding Fluorine release. Its reported improvements included clearer error reporting, better restart behavior, and greater network stability. These changes were intended to make the WAN connectivity stack more resilient when errors or interruptions occur.
Stability, scale, and integration work
LF Networking also listed stability, scalability, functional enhancements, bug fixes, and infrastructure improvements. These are broad release goals rather than quantified performance results: the announcement does not provide benchmarks or a specific scale limit. The work was intended to help vendors and downstream projects assemble and deploy platforms that depend on OpenDaylight.
How does OpenDaylight relate to Kubernetes, OpenStack, and ONAP?
OpenDaylight is a network-control framework, not a replacement for an application orchestrator or cloud platform. The 2019 announcement names Kubernetes, OpenStack, ONAP, OPNFV, Akraino Edge Stack, and Network Service Mesh as related or downstream communities. That list reflects ecosystem relationships; it does not mean every integration is built in, enabled by default, or available in every deployment.

For Kubernetes and OpenStack, it describes ecosystem integration but does not enumerate particular components, setup steps, or supported versions.
Which companies were associated with OpenDaylight?
LF Networking’s Neon announcement names AT&T, CableLabs, China Mobile, Ericsson, Globo.com, Orange, Tencent, Verizon, Inspur, Lumina Networks, Cisco, and Red Hat as adopters or supporters. Being named in the announcement does not establish that each company used the same components, deployed them at the same scale, or continues to use them today.
The release also quotes Ericsson as saying it had deployed OpenDaylight software to more than 50 service providers worldwide. That is Ericsson’s statement as quoted in the 2019 announcement, not a current deployment count.
Does the Neon announcement show that OpenDaylight is still used for SDN?
It shows that OpenDaylight had an active release and a broad ecosystem in March 2019. It cannot establish current project activity, the latest release, present-day security posture, or ongoing vendor availability. The announcement also does not provide a present-day comparison with other SDN controllers. Anyone evaluating ODL for a new deployment should verify those current details directly with the project and relevant vendors.
What should teams evaluate before choosing an SDN controller?
Neon’s release notes describe capabilities and goals, not a complete procurement or architecture comparison. For an evaluation, compare controllers against the requirements of the actual network:
Quick Recap
- Protocols: Confirm the required northbound APIs and southbound protocols are supported in the specific release and deployment.
- Workload fit: Check whether cloud and edge virtualization, WAN routing, and optical transport are relevant and supported for your use case.
- Integration: Validate the exact Kubernetes, OpenStack, or ONAP components and versions you intend to connect; ecosystem association alone is not proof of compatibility.
- Operations: Test stability, scaling behavior, restart and recovery behavior, and troubleshooting visibility against your network’s workload.
- Lifecycle and support: Verify current maintenance, security practices, release cadence, and the availability and terms of commercial support.
