ChromeOS’s Linux environment is Debian, while Viber names 64-bit Ubuntu and Fedora as supported Linux platforms. Treat the Linux route as a workaround, and check whether Viber’s Android app is available for your particular Chromebook before installing anything.
Can you install Viber on a Chromebook?
There is no ChromeOS desktop download listed on Viber’s download page. Viber offers desktop downloads for Linux, but its supported-platforms list names 64-bit Ubuntu and Fedora—not ChromeOS or Debian. Viber also says Linux updates and support are limited.
That makes ChromeOS’s Linux development environment a possible route, not an officially supported Chromebook configuration. Google’s Linux environment runs Debian, and official documentation does not guarantee that Viber’s Linux packages will work in it on every Chromebook.
Choose between the Linux and Android routes
| Route | What you need | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Linux desktop app | A Chromebook that supports the Linux development environment, plus a Viber Linux package. | Viber offers Linux downloads and lists 64-bit Ubuntu and Fedora as supported. ChromeOS’s Linux environment is Debian, and Viber says Linux support and updates are limited. |
| Android app | A Chromebook with Google Play Store access and a Viber listing that is installable on that device. | This may avoid the Linux desktop package, but Play Store and app compatibility vary by Chromebook. Viber lists Android phones and tablets, not Chromebooks, as supported platforms. |
Use the Android route if you want the mobile app and it is available for your device. Consider Linux if you want the desktop app and your Chromebook offers the Linux environment, while keeping in mind that Debian compatibility is not guaranteed. Either way, check calling features on your own device before relying on them.

How to try Viber Desktop through Chromebook Linux
- Check that Linux is available. Open Settings > About ChromeOS > Developers and look for Linux development environment. Google says setup creates a Debian environment and estimates that it can take 10 minutes or more. Availability depends on the Chromebook.
- Get Viber from its official download page. Use Viber’s download page for the current Linux options. Viber lists Ubuntu, Fedora, and AppImage downloads; it does not specifically certify AppImage for ChromeOS. Its stated Linux support is for 64-bit Ubuntu and Fedora.
- Install and activate Viber on your phone first. Viber Desktop requires an existing mobile Viber account. Follow the instructions for the package you downloaded to install the desktop app in the Linux environment.
- Link the desktop app. Open Viber on the Chromebook, scan the displayed QR code with Viber on your phone, then approve and sync the desktop from the phone. See Viber’s desktop setup instructions if you need the exact linking flow.
- Check the features you need. If you intend to call, test the relevant permissions and behavior on your Chromebook before depending on it. Google says microphone access can be enabled for Linux apps, but states that cameras are not yet supported in the described Linux environment. That does not establish how every Viber feature will behave.
How to check the Viber Android app
- Open Chromebook Settings and check whether the Google Play Store is available for your device.
- Open the Play Store and search for Viber. Confirm that the listing offers installation on this specific Chromebook; seeing the Play Store does not guarantee that every app works on every model.
- If it installs, sign in and test the features you need. Google notes that some Android apps are not compatible with some Chromebook models. See Google’s instructions for installing Android apps.
What to check before relying on Viber
- Your Chromebook model: Linux development environment and Play Store availability depend on device support.
- Your account: The desktop route requires Viber already installed and activated on a phone so you can link it by QR code.
- Your intended use: A successful installation does not establish that calls or other features will work reliably on your device. Google says its documented Linux environment does not support cameras, and no compatibility guarantee for Viber on Chromebook is listed.
- The support boundary: Viber does not list ChromeOS as a desktop platform, and its Linux support is limited. A package running in Debian would not make the Chromebook an officially supported Viber system.
