Its maker, Holepunch, presents it as an alternative to centralized services. But “social media” is a broad label: Keet’s documented features make it a communications and community app, not a demonstrated replacement for every feature of large social networks.
What is Keet?
Keet is an app developed by Holepunch. Its official site describes it as “a peer-to-peer messaging app built for privacy, safety and free speech.” The product supports direct messages, group conversations, broadcast feeds, file sharing, and voice and video calls. The Apple App Store lists it in the Social Networking category, but that label does not make it equivalent to a broad social network with a public profile ecosystem, recommendation feed, or the many other features those services may offer.
Keet is available for desktop and mobile, and its site describes syncing across devices. Availability and features can vary by platform or change over time, so check the current Keet site and Keet Support for the latest details. The Apple App Store listing identifies Holepunch Inc. as the developer; its listing and availability apply to that store and may differ by region.
How does Keet work without central servers?
Keet says participants communicate directly with one another peer-to-peer, rather than routing communications through central servers, and that conversations are end-to-end encrypted. These are descriptions from Keet and Holepunch, not findings from an independent security audit. They should not be read as proof that every aspect of network behavior, metadata handling, or every release has been independently verified.

Holepunch describes Pear as a peer-to-peer runtime and a development and deployment platform for building and distributing apps. Keet is one app associated with that stack. What can you do in Keet?
Messages and groups
Users can exchange direct messages and join regular group conversations. Keet’s support documentation says messages to someone who is offline or experiencing connection problems may not arrive immediately. Its description of encrypted room data remaining available when people are offline should not be taken as a guarantee of instant or eventual delivery in every situation. Broadcast feeds
Keet’s support materials describe broadcast rooms as one-way announcement spaces: a useful format for a person or group to share updates, rather than a regular back-and-forth chat. The label “feed” here does not establish that Keet offers the discovery and recommendation systems associated with major social networks.
Calls and file sharing

Is Keet encrypted, and is it more private?
Keet says communications are end-to-end encrypted and exchanged directly between participants without central servers. That answers what the publisher claims about its design; it does not establish a blanket ranking that Keet is “more private” than another app. A fair comparison would need to examine equivalent evidence about encryption, metadata, server dependencies, offline delivery, identity and recovery, and platform support. The available product descriptions are not a substitute for an independent security assessment.
Do you need an email address or phone number to set up Keet?
Keet’s setup guide says you can start without providing an email address or phone number. It describes a 24-word recovery phrase for restoring a profile and messages after device loss or reinstallation, and says setting a passphrase is critical to recovery. Treat the phrase as a secret: do not post it or send it to anyone. Losing it can affect your ability to recover your profile and messages. Is Keet free, and how is it funded?
Keet’s site and support materials describe the app as free and without ads or subscriptions. The reviewed product materials do not explain another revenue source in detail, so the stated relationship—Keet is developed by Holepunch, which says it is backed by Tether—does not by itself establish how ongoing development is funded. What should you consider before relying on Keet?
- Its scope: Keet documents communications and community-room features, not a complete replacement for every function of a large social network.
- Its security claims: Encryption and peer-to-peer operation are described by the publisher; the product materials cited here are not an independent audit.
- Offline contacts: Messages may be delayed when a recipient is offline or having connection problems.
- Recovery: Your recovery phrase matters if you lose access to a device, so understand Keet’s recovery instructions before relying on the app.
