That announcement does not confirm that the feature is currently available to every buyer, seller, or market.
Can you buy something through Instagram DMs?
Meta announced a conversation-led purchase flow on July 18, 2022. A customer could message a qualified small business, ask about an item, discuss details such as customization, and place the order without leaving the chat. Meta’s example involved a backpack customized with initials.
In the announced flow, the business confirmed the purchase details, created a payment request showing the item description and price, and collected payment. Meta named Meta Pay as the payment method. Meta said purchases were securely processed and described them as protected, but its announcement does not establish the current terms or eligibility for protection, refunds, or disputes.
The announcement is a description of what Meta introduced in 2022, not confirmation that a particular account can use the feature today. Availability may depend on the buyer, business, and market.

How did order tracking in Direct work?
Meta said that buyers could track an order in the same chat thread used to arrange it and ask the business follow-up questions. In the announcement, Meta put it this way: “In that same chat thread, you’ll also be able to track your order and ask the business any follow-up questions.”
If you arranged a purchase in Direct, open the conversation with the seller and look for the purchase details and messages about fulfillment. If the status or delivery information is unclear, ask the business in that chat or use the seller’s order-support channel. The announcement does not establish that every current Direct order will show a tracking update in Instagram.
Instagram Direct purchase vs. Instagram Shop checkout
A product tag in Instagram Shop and a purchase arranged in Direct are different routes. A tagged product may lead to checkout on the seller’s website; that is not the same as placing an order through a Direct payment request.

Shopify’s Instagram Shopping guidance describes product tagging and website checkout redirection. Its separate checkout-method guidance explains that checkout options depend on location, eligibility, and seller setup. These are Shopify’s channel instructions and should not be read as a universal description of every Instagram seller’s checkout.

Where to look for your order details
- If you arranged the purchase in Direct: Open the seller conversation and check its messages for purchase details and fulfillment updates. Contact the seller there if you need clarification.
- If you tapped a Shop product tag and checked out on a website: Use the merchant’s order confirmation and tracking information. Contact that seller through its order-support channel if needed.
Do not assume Instagram can retrieve tracking information for an order completed on an external website. Meta’s 2020 Shops announcement described messaging for questions, support, and delivery tracking, but it does not prove that a particular order today will appear in Direct.

Meta’s July 18, 2022 post is the source for the Direct flow, its Meta Pay reference, and tracking in the same chat. It also reported that one billion people message a business each week across Meta’s family of apps; that figure was Meta’s 2022 statement, not a current estimate or an Instagram-shopping-specific count.

The announcement does not settle present-day eligibility for a particular account, current buyer-protection terms, or Direct-specific refund and dispute policies. Check the seller’s current checkout terms and support information before relying on a protection or refund process.
