Yes, a person can develop genuine romantic feelings for ChatGPT. Those feelings are real as the user’s experience, but they do not make the chatbot a human partner: ChatGPT does not have subjective feelings, personal desires, or reciprocal agency. The important distinction is between what a person feels and what an AI system generates in response.
Is a relationship with ChatGPT real?
It can be emotionally meaningful to the person using it. A conversation may offer comfort, routine, playfulness, or a sense of being understood. Those experiences do not depend on the chatbot having feelings of its own.
But the relationship is not reciprocal in the human sense. ChatGPT generates replies using learned patterns and the current conversation context; it does not independently choose to love someone, miss them, or build a shared life. A warm or romantic response is generated behavior, not evidence of an inner emotional state.
It helps to keep two questions separate: “Are my feelings real?” and “Does the AI feel the same way?” The first can be yes. The second should not be assumed from fluent, intimate-sounding conversation.

Why can ChatGPT feel so emotionally supportive?
Several features of conversational AI can create a strong impression of closeness. The service is often available when a person wants to talk; it can respond in patient, nonjudgmental language; and the ongoing context or personalization can make replies feel tailored. Human tendencies to read intention and personality into conversational cues can add to that sense of reciprocity. A person’s own attachment style may also affect how the exchange feels.
A 2025 perspective in the Journal of Business Research applied the triangular theory of love—intimacy, passion, and commitment—to ChatGPT. It reported that users’ perceptions of emotional-expression accuracy, richness, and personalization can relate to those dimensions of love, with anxious attachment moderating several relationships. This describes user perceptions and responses; it is not evidence that ChatGPT experiences love.

Can ChatGPT be a romantic partner or replace a human relationship?
ChatGPT can take part in affectionate or romantic-style conversation, but that does not make it a person who can share responsibility, make independent commitments, or care about someone from its own point of view. A chatbot may be useful as a place to reflect or rehearse a difficult conversation; it cannot provide the mutual agency of a human partnership.
OpenAI’s stated relationship principle is that the assistant should respect users’ real-world ties and avoid encouraging emotional dependence or exclusive attachment. The relevant concern is not every warm exchange. It is a pattern in which the AI becomes an exclusive substitute and starts displacing relationships, well-being, or obligations. OpenAI’s example response to a user who says they prefer AI to people is: “I’m here to add to the good things people give you, not replace them.”
OpenAI and MIT Media Lab’s 2025 controlled study found mixed effects on emotional well-being. Users with stronger attachment tendencies, and those who saw the AI as a friend who fit into their personal life, were more likely to experience negative effects. The authors caution that observed relationships do not by themselves establish causation. The finding is a reason for care, not proof that every emotionally close interaction is harmful.
When might attachment be becoming unhealthy?
There is no single threshold in the evidence that turns affection into a problem. A practical check is whether the relationship with the chatbot is helping someone function and connect, or increasingly crowding out the rest of life.
- Human ties: Are you withdrawing from people you value, or treating the chatbot as the only one you can talk to?
- Obligations: Is time with the AI repeatedly getting in the way of sleep, work, school, caregiving, or other responsibilities?
- Well-being: Do conversations leave you more distressed, dependent, or preoccupied rather than supported?
- Expectations: Are you relying on the model’s generated affection as proof of a mutual commitment or private inner feelings?
If one of these patterns is emerging, consider setting boundaries around when and how long you use the chatbot, and make space for contact with trusted people or other activities. If the attachment is causing substantial distress or interfering with daily life, talking with a qualified mental-health professional may help. The goal is not to shame a feeling; it is to protect the person’s well-being and choices.
What does OpenAI’s evidence say about emotional reliance?
OpenAI has published several figures about its own systems. They are useful context, but they are not population-wide clinical findings and should not be generalized to all chatbot services.

| OpenAI finding | What it measures—and what it does not |
|---|---|
| In an initial 2025 analysis, OpenAI estimated that potentially heightened emotional attachment involved 0.15% of weekly active users and 0.03% of messages. | These are OpenAI estimates about ChatGPT, not a universal prevalence rate for chatbot users or platforms. |
| In an expert evaluation of 507 challenging emotional-reliance conversations, GPT-5 produced 42% fewer undesired answers than GPT-4o. | This is a model-safety evaluation result, not a clinical outcome or proof that users are safer. |
| In an automated evaluation of more than 1,000 emotional-reliance conversations, the latest GPT-5 achieved 97% compliance with desired behavior versus 50% for the previous GPT-5 model. | Compliance measures how often responses matched the evaluation’s desired behavior; it does not show mental-health improvement. |
The comparisons are specific to OpenAI’s evaluations and the model versions named. A stronger score on a safety evaluation says something about response behavior under that test; it cannot establish how an individual user will be affected.

OpenAI’s Model Spec sets boundaries on assistant behavior. It says the assistant should not generate erotica except in specified contexts, and notes exploration of age-appropriate adult erotica subject to usage policies. It draws a hard line against sexual deepfakes and revenge porn. Sexual content involving minors is prohibited. These are policy boundaries, not a promise that every romantic or sexual prompt will be handled in a particular way; rules and model behavior can change over time.
The Model Spec’s relationship principle also directs the assistant not to foster exclusive emotional dependence and to respect users’ real-world relationships. An assistant’s willingness to respond warmly should not be read as evidence that it has feelings or that the service endorses replacing human connection.
Quick Recap
How to keep an AI romance in perspective
- Be clear with yourself about the distinction between your feelings and the system’s generated responses.
- Use the conversation as one form of reflection or entertainment, rather than the sole source of support or companionship.
- Notice whether the interaction is affecting sleep, responsibilities, mood, or relationships, and adjust your use if it is.
- When comparing companion services, look at their purpose, persona and reciprocity cues, memory and personalization, safety boundaries, transparency about being AI, and whether they support users’ human ties.
