For malware and phishing protection, Quad9 is a strong threat-focused choice; Cloudflare offers a simple choice between security-only and family filtering; and AdGuard adds ad and tracker blocking. For family controls, compare OpenDNS FamilyShield, CleanBrowsing Family Filter and CIRA Canadian Shield Family mode. These services act at the DNS lookup level, so the right choice depends on which categories you want blocked and which controls matter to you.
What DNS filtering can—and cannot—do
A DNS resolver translates a domain name, such as a website address, into the IP address a device needs to connect. A filtering resolver can refuse to provide an answer for domains on a threat or content blocklist. Depending on the service and profile, that can help prevent connections to known malicious domains or restrict access to adult content, ads or trackers.
DNS filtering is a preventive layer, not a replacement for antivirus or endpoint security, browser anti-phishing features, operating-system updates or account security. It can miss threats reached through a direct IP address, a domain shared with legitimate services, or an application’s own encrypted DNS resolver. A device or app using a different resolver may also bypass the filtering configured on the network.

Which DNS service fits your goal?
For malware and phishing protection
Quad9 is the clearest threat-focused option in this comparison: its service description specifically covers malicious hostnames and names malware, phishing, spyware and botnets. Cloudflare’s malware/phishing profile is a simpler alternative if you want that protection from Cloudflare’s resolver. Neither description makes DNS filtering a substitute for device security.
For a simple adult-content filter

How to set up DNS filtering
- Choose the profile. Decide whether you need malware/phishing protection, family filtering, or ad/tracker blocking in addition to threat protection. A service may offer separate profiles with different behavior.
- Get current connection details from the provider. Copy the IPv4 or IPv6 addresses, or the DoH/DoT hostname, from that service’s own setup instructions. For example, Cloudflare’s malware-only IPv4 pair is
1.1.1.2and1.0.0.2; its family pair is1.1.1.3and1.0.0.3. Quad9’s recommended IPv4 addresses are9.9.9.9and149.112.112.112. Use the provider’s current documentation for all other endpoints and for any IPv6 configuration. - Choose where to configure it. Set DNS on the router for devices using that home network, or configure an individual phone, computer or tablet to test the service or use it while traveling. Router menus and device settings differ by model and operating system, so follow the provider’s instructions for your equipment.
- Confirm the change. Check the device or provider’s diagnostic instructions to verify which resolver it is using. Then test a blocked category using a test domain or page supplied by the provider; do not rely on an unrelated website as proof that filtering works.
- Keep other protections enabled. Continue using operating-system updates, browser anti-phishing features and endpoint security. DNS filtering only acts on DNS lookups and may not cover every route an app or threat can use.
What to expect from a DNS block
A blocked lookup can stop a device from resolving a listed domain, but DNS services differ in the lists they use, the categories they cover and the controls they expose. A block is not a guarantee that every harmful site will be caught, and an allowed lookup is not proof that a site is safe. If a legitimate site is blocked, check whether the service offers a way to review or adjust its filtering; the options vary by provider and profile.
