No: Apple’s 11-inch iPad has an A16 chip, not A17 Pro. The iPad with A17 Pro is the iPad mini (A17 Pro), a different model. Both may be relevant to Apple Intelligence, but compatibility also depends on the iPadOS version and language or region.
Which iPad has the A17 Pro?
Apple identifies the 11-inch iPad as an A16 model, while the A17 Pro appears in the iPad mini (A17 Pro). They are separate devices, not two names for the same iPad. See Apple’s 11-inch iPad specifications and iPad mini specifications.
| Model | Screen size | Chip | Apple Intelligence |
|---|---|---|---|
| 11-inch iPad | 11 inches | A16 | Not listed as compatible in Apple’s iPadOS 27-or-later guidance |
| iPad mini (A17 Pro) | 8.3 inches | A17 Pro | Listed as compatible in Apple’s iPadOS 27-or-later guidance |
Screen sizes and chips are from Apple’s model specifications. Apple’s current compatibility guidance lists iPad mini (A17 Pro) and iPad models with M1 or later for Apple Intelligence on iPadOS 27 or later; it does not list the A16 11-inch iPad. Apple’s Apple Intelligence compatibility guidance.
Does the iPad mini (A17 Pro) support Apple Intelligence?
Yes, according to Apple’s Support guide for iPadOS 27 or later: iPad mini (A17 Pro) and iPad models with M1 or later are compatible. The A16 11-inch iPad is not among the models named in that guidance. Check Apple’s current requirements before making a purchase, since compatibility guidance can change with software updates.

Language and region matter
Compatible hardware does not mean every Apple Intelligence feature is available everywhere or in every language. Apple says availability varies by language and region. Check the current availability information for the language and location where you plan to use the features.
How to choose between the 11-inch iPad and iPad mini
- Choose by size first: the 11-inch iPad is the larger-screen option; iPad mini is the more compact device, with an 8.3-inch display.
- Choose by chip and compatibility: the iPad mini has A17 Pro and is named in Apple’s iPadOS 27-or-later Apple Intelligence compatibility guidance. The 11-inch iPad has A16 and is not named there.
- Check software and availability: confirm that the device can use the required iPadOS version and that the features you want are available in your language and region.
Apple’s October 2024 announcement described the initial Apple Intelligence rollout for iPad as requiring A17 Pro or M1 and later, with U.S. English features arriving through iPadOS 18.1 at that time. That was a historical rollout statement, not a current availability guarantee; Apple’s current Support guidance is the relevant reference for iPadOS 27 or later. Apple’s October 2024 announcement.
