BlackBerry’s “triple shield” refers to three distinct software offerings: BlackBerry UEM for managing and securing endpoints, SecuSUITE for sensitive communications, and AtHoc for coordinating critical-event response. They address connected organizational needs, but they are not one product, and the name is not a technical standard.

What does BlackBerry mean by “triple shield”?

The phrase comes from a sponsored CSO Online BrandPost published December 16, 2024, authored by Tash Stamatelos, identified there as BlackBerry’s Vice President, APAC. It is vendor-authored framing for three complementary organizational software offerings—not a standalone product or a physical three-part system.

BlackBerry’s Secure Communications overview describes the same broad division of roles: UEM manages devices and applications, SecuSUITE protects communications, and AtHoc supports crisis response. Those roles may complement each other, but that does not establish that they automatically integrate in every customer environment.

What does each tool do?

BlackBerry UEM: manage and protect endpoints

Unified Endpoint Management (UEM) is intended to manage organizational devices and applications, apply policy, and protect organizational data on managed endpoints. BlackBerry describes deployment options that include controlled, on-premises, and sovereign environments. The available option and its suitability depend on the deployment; confirm the specific architecture and controls required for your organization.

BlackBerry SecuSUITE: secure sensitive communications

SecuSUITE is for secure voice, messaging, and file sharing. BlackBerry positions it for government and mission-critical environments and describes it as a certified solution. Certification is not a blanket guarantee for every product version, hosting arrangement, or customer configuration; confirm the relevant credential and scope for the exact deployment.

BlackBerry AtHoc: coordinate critical-event response

AtHoc is a critical-event management (CEM) offering for preparing for, responding to, and recovering from incidents. The December 2024 sponsored article describes a managed-service option with 24/7/365 expert support, including assistance with workflows, playbooks, incident monitoring, and notifications. That description is time-specific: ask BlackBerry to confirm current service scope, support terms, and regional availability.

How the three roles fit together

Offering Primary job Question it helps answer
UEM Manage endpoints and applications and apply security policy How are organizational devices and data governed?
SecuSUITE Protect sensitive voice, messaging, and file sharing How can authorized people communicate securely?
AtHoc Coordinate communications and response during critical events How are people notified and response activity organized during an incident?

In practical terms, UEM governs the endpoint, SecuSUITE secures sensitive communications, and AtHoc helps coordinate an organizational response when an incident affects people or operations. Treat them as separate capabilities to evaluate, rather than assuming that buying one supplies the functions of the others.

What to verify before procurement

BlackBerry’s certifications page lists credentials across its product suite. Examples in the published material include NIAP/Common Criteria and BSI credentials for SecuSUITE, and FedRAMP Class D (High) for AtHoc. A credential associated with one product does not automatically apply to another product or every version and deployment.

  • Match credentials to the requirement. Confirm the product and version, deployment, authorization boundary, and intended data classification with BlackBerry and the relevant authority.
  • Check hosting and sovereignty. Establish where the service and data will reside, who controls the infrastructure, and whether the available deployment meets your organization’s sovereignty requirements.
  • Validate resilience and integrations. Assess the capabilities needed in your own environment instead of inferring interoperability or continuity behavior from the products’ complementary roles.
  • Define managed-service expectations. For AtHoc, confirm included support hours, responsibilities, incident-monitoring scope, and availability in your region.
  • Confirm sector fit against actual requirements. BlackBerry positions its offerings for government and critical-infrastructure use cases, including defense, emergency response, and essential-services operators. Those stated markets do not establish that a particular agency or operator uses a particular configuration.

Capabilities, certifications, licensing, service options, and availability can change. Reconfirm current terms and documentation during procurement.
